Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

Averill named to Pan Am Games roster, Bourne’s team moves on

Hawaii All-American middle blocker Taylor Averill was one of 12 players selected to play of the U.S. men’s volleyball team at the Pan American Games later this month in Toronto. Averill helped the Rainbow Warriors to an NCAA championship berth last May as a senior, The team manager is former UH All-American Tom Pestolesi. U.S. junior men’s team takes silver

The U.S. junior men’s volleyball team, with two University of Hawaii players on the roster, was swept by Brazil in Sunday’s gold medal match of the U21 Pan American Cup in Gatineau, Canada. Outside hitter Kupono Fey subbed in during Set 1 and played the rest of the match with six kills in the 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 loss. Big West to hold conference sand tourney, US men’s teams win

The Big West announced it would hold a conference tournament in sand volleyball next spring in order to qualify for the NCAA tournament. As suspected earlier, CSU Bakerfield and Sac State will join as affiliate members to make it a six-team conference which will have UH, The Beach, CSUN and Cal Poly. U.S. Men’s JNT goes 2-1 in pool play at Pan Am Cup

Junior Naitonal Team, which has Kupono Fey and Jennings Franciskovic on the roster, swept El Salvador Thursday to finish 2-1 in pool play at the Pan Am Cup in Gatineau, Canada. Franciskovic started at setter and Fey played in Sets 2 and 3. The U.S. plays Mexico in the quarterfinals Friday. U.S. beat Barbados 3-0 and lost to Brazil 3-1 earlier in the week.
