Wahine close fall with Kama’aina tournament

Coolen ready to test newcomers

UH softball coach Bob Coolen won’t wait long to test a young Rainbow Wahine roster. The Wahine opened fall practice on Monday with 10 newcomers taking the field and they’ll have two workouts behind them when the coaches split them up for intrasquad scrimmages Thursday and Friday. Five from UH at World University Games

Before joining the Rainbow Wahine golf team this fall, Eimi Koga is spending part of her summer representing the country at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea. The Moanalua graduate is part of the three-member U.S. team and shot a 4-over-par 76 at Naju Gold Lake Country Club on Wednesday. She was tied for 21st after the first round. Rainbow Wahine pitcher Brittany Hitchcock closed her week at the World Cup of Softball with two wins in five appearances in Puerto Rico’s run to a third-place finish in the eight-team tournament in Irvine, Calif. Hitchcock gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief and earned the win in Puerto Rico’s 3-2 victory over Japan on Saturday morning. Rainbow Wahine pitcher Brittany Hitchcock earned a win in relief for Puerto Rico on Monday in the World Cup of Softball in Irvine, Calif. Hitchcock gave up two runs on five hits over three innings and Puerto Rico rallied to a 6-5 win over Venezuela in the second game of a doubleheader at Deanna Manning Stadium. Softball notes: Jaramillo transfers to Utah State

Sarina Jaramillo, the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s starting shortstop the last two seasons, has transferred to Utah State. The Aggies announced her addition last week. Jaramillo started 49 games for the Rainbow Wahine this spring and hit .299 while driving in 18 runs and ended her sophomore season with a .968 fielding percentage. She had a nine-game hitting streak at the end of the nonconference schedule to raise her average to .340 heading into Big West play. While her bat […]

Grimes going back to Super Regionals

Katie Grimes made two appearances in the NCAA softball Super Regionals as a player and is headed to a third as a coach. Grimes, a former Rainbow Wahine catcher, is an assistant on the North Carolina State coaching staff and the Wolfpack advanced to the program’s first super regional by sweeping through the Harrisonburg, Va., regional hosted by James Madison last weekend.
