Hawaii soccer: For once, Wahine in favorable position on road

By Brian McInnis on October 18, 2019

UPDATE: Hawaii went on the road and beat UC Riverside 2-0 to improve to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since the WAC championship season of 2007. After a scoreless first half, UH got goals from Kelci Sumida in the 55th minute (assisted by Kayla Watanabe) and from Eliza Ammendolia in the 88th (from Daelenn Tokunaga). UPDATE: Riverside made a stat fix to reflect that Elena Palacios had the assist for Sumida, not Watanabe. It was the team-high-tying […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football hosts Air Force, volleyball 2 at home, soccer hits road

By Brian McInnis on October 14, 2019

In this week’s edition of the Forecast, conference races have heated up for the three primary Hawaii sports in action. UH football is licking its wounds from a 59-37 beating at No. 14 Boise State, and has to turn right around and play a very good Air Force team that spanked Fresno State on Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors are still in great shape in the Mountain West’s West Division, though, if they can pull off a win this weekend against […]

Hawaii soccer: Another Kayla (Watanabe) strikes as Wahine dispatch UC Irvine

By Brian McInnis on October 11, 2019

Kayla Watanabe did not one, but two emphatic, leaping fist pumps after scoring the first goal of her Rainbow Wahine soccer career. Two was fitting, as it turned out to represent one for each of her scores in Hawaii’s 3-0 win over UC Irvine on Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Watanabe’s two goals — one in each half, each assisted by freshman midfielder Eliza Ammendolia — staked the Rainbow Wahine (4-6-1, 2-0 Big West) to a 2-0 lead and […]

Hawaii soccer: Wahine shoot for unprecedented 2-0 Big West start

By Brian McInnis on October 10, 2019

The Hawaii soccer team, by virtue of its Big West-opening comeback win over Cal State Northridge last week, is already in uncharted territory. UH (3-6-1 overall) can explore further off the map with a win, or even a draw, against UC Irvine (3-9, 2-0) tonight at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. (UPDATE: The Rainbow Wahine ran away from Irvine, 3-0, for their first win over the Anteaters in four tries as a Big West member at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Kayla […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football’s showdown in Boise, volleyball’s at Central Cali Coast

By Brian McInnis on October 7, 2019

It’s a pivotal week in conference play for both the Hawaii football and women’s volleyball teams. The Rainbow Warriors, well rested coming off a bye week and still feeling good following the 54-3 beatdown of Nevada in Reno, head up to Boise to take on the No. 14 Broncos on The Blue, a place they’ve never won. The No. 19 Rainbow Wahine? All they have to do is head up the Central California Coast for matchups on consecutive days with […]

Hawaii soccer: Ryan scores twice as Wahine dramatically win first Big West opener

By Dave Reardon on October 4, 2019

For the first time ever, the University of Hawaii soccer team can look at the Big West standings and see 1.000 next to its name. The Rainbow Wahine had lost their opener in all seven years of conference membership going back to 2012. UH finally broke that slump Thursday, and in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Cal State Northridge at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Wahine are 3-6-1 overall. Northridge is 6-4-3. UH broke a four-game losing […]

Hawaii soccer: Wahine seek first result in a Big West opener

By Brian McInnis on October 3, 2019

Big West openers have not gone well for the Hawaii soccer team. Home, away, it has not mattered. Seven losses in seven such games to date, in fact. Last season was the most painful of the bunch, as the Rainbow Wahine gave up a goal with five seconds left in double overtime at UC Irvine — five seconds from getting their first result and a point in the league standings right off the bat. Thus, UH has always played from behind […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football off, volleyball and soccer home for Big West

By Brian McInnis on September 30, 2019

Its duties accomplished for the moment, the Hawaii football team exits stage left to make way for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball and soccer squads in this week’s Rainbow Forecast. The Rainbow Warriors (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West) and newly minted Big West Offensive Player of the Week Cole McDonald get a well-deserved break this week coming off their emphatic 54-3 win over Nevada in Reno — and ensuing travel difficulties getting home. The bye could serve the Warriors well heading into […]
