By Brian McInnis on January 30, 2020

Tributes from all over the world continue to pour in following the death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna along with seven others in a helicopter crash on Sunday. The Hawaii basketball teams were no different. Bryant, who continued to have an influence in basketball in the years after his retirement in 2016, was an icon to many of the Rainbow Warriors and Wahine. Here is a compilation of video interviews about Bryant with UH players and […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii basketball teams hold down the fort; water polo and tennis teams go forth

By Brian McInnis on January 27, 2020

The basketball world — heck, the world in general — was shaken by the death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant on Sunday. That morning’s helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif., took the life of Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others. Locally, the mood changed quickly from the previous night’s wins for the UH basketball teams — at UC Riverside for the women and at home, and a men’s thriller over UC Davis in the program’s 100th season celebration game. UH paid […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Rainbow Wahine get first Big West road win

By Brian McInnis on January 25, 2020

The Hawaii women’s basketball team picked up its first conference road win of the season with a 65-59 decision at UC Riverside today. Unlike in its loss at Long Beach State on Thursday, UH (9-10, 3-3 Big West) jumped out fast and led the rest of the way in beating the Highlanders (6-13, 2-3) for the second time in 10 days. The starting backcourt of Julissa Tago (15 points) and Nae Nae Calhoun (10) did much of the heavy lifting, […]

Rainbow Forecast: Football coach hiring possible; men’s volleyball caps road trip; hoops teams win streaks on line

By Brian McInnis on January 20, 2020

Will the Hawaii football team have a new head coach this week? That’s the big question in this week’s Forecast, one that could be resolved as soon as Tuesday, when UH is allowed to begin formal reviews of its applications to find the successor to Nick Rolovich. Assistants like Craig Stutzmann and Brian Smith have been reported to be in the process of joining Washington State’s staff under Rolo, but could still be in the running for the Manoa top […]

Hawaii basketball: UH women and men both hang close, then efficiently finish off their foes

By Dave Reardon on January 19, 2020

Fear is a word that is never supposed to be uttered by a coach or athlete, an emotion never to be admitted to. You don’t “fear” your opponent, you “respect” him or her. Still, for our purposes here, both University of Hawaii basketball teams were “Fear Factor” contestants on Saturday. And both conquered those fears that they must describe in different words. The women beat Cal State Fullerton 79-72, and the men topped UC Santa Barbara 70-63. They both came […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Laura Beeman receives 3-year extension

By Brian McInnis on January 17, 2020

Hawaii women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman has been granted a three-year contract extension, Hawaii Warrior World has learned. Beeman, whose existing contract was set to expire after the 2020-21 season, is now contracted through the 2023-24 season. UH is expected to make an official announcement today. UH has reached the postseason five times (1 NCAA, 4 WNIT) since Beeman took over in in the 2012-13 season, including a WNIT appearance in the 2018-19 season after the Rainbow Wahine reached the […]

Rainbow Forecast: Warrior volleyball hits the road; 2 basketball doubleheaders; Wahine tennis and water polo begin

By Brian McInnis on January 13, 2020

The top-ranked Hawaii men’s volleyball team certainly looked legitimate at home playing against unranked competition. How will the Rainbow Warriors fare on the road against some ranked foes? That’s one of the big questions in UH athletics this week — UH plays four straight on the mainland, starting with two this weekend — but there’s also a pair of basketball doubleheaders at the Stan Sheriff Center (Thursday and Saturday) to occupy your time. The Rainbow Warriors and Wahine hoops squads are […]

Hawaii basketball: Pivotal Saturday matchups for Rainbow Warriors, Wahine

By Brian McInnis on January 11, 2020

UPDATE II: The UH basketball teams went 0-2 against the defending Big West champions on Saturday, as the Rainbow Warriors fell 74-60 at UC Irvine — their fifth straight loss to the Anteaters and seventh in the last eight meetings. UH spotted the hosts an 11-0 lead, rallied back to lead briefly, fell behind by 14 at halftime, and got within four by finally succumbing. UPDATE: The Rainbow Wahine basketball team fell behind by 21 going into the fourth, rallied within […]
