The recent success of quarterbacks who grew up in Hawaii has evoked descriptions of a “golden age.” But a generation ago, in 2000, three Saint Louis School graduates were starting college quarterbacks — Darnell Arceneaux at Utah, Jason Gesser at Washington State, and Tim Chang at Hawaii. A day after the championship game, Saint Louis School head coach Cal Lee was praising his former quarterback. Lee said Chevan Cordeiro, who signed a letter of intent last month to play for the Warriors this year, has all the tools to succeed as a college QB. Lee said Cordeiro has a strong arm, is elusive, can decipher defenses quickly, and has a high football IQ. “He’ll be fine,” Lee said. “Mark my words.”

Two freshmen — quarterback Jeremy Moussa and defensive lineman Blessman Taala — are enrolled at UH and will begin taking classes today, the first day of the spring semester. Moussa graduated a semester early from Eleanor Roosevelt High (Corona, Calif.) to participate in the offseason conditioning program, learn the offense, and compete in spring training. Taala graduated in June, but delayed enrolling at UH to completely heal from an injury. He officially signed a letter of intent last month.

Most of the UH coaches, including Nick Rolovich, departed yesterday for Charlotte for the four-day American Football Coaches Association’s convention that begins today. There are more than 6,000 attendees for what is considered to be an important gathering to learn, network and exchange ideas. After returning to Hawaii at the end of the week, Rolovich is expected to fill the final three slots on his coaching staff — at offensive line, defensive line and receivers.

Former Warrior defensive end Meffy Koloamatangi is participating in the College Gridiron Showcase in Addison, Texas. Pro scouts coordinate this invitation-only event, which is modeled after the NFL’s OTA format. From today through Wednesday, pro prospects will participate in meetings and individual drills, and be evaluated on practices, controlled scrimmages and interviews.
