Former UH running back signs with European team

By Stephen Tsai on March 30, 2018

Former UH running back Ryan Tuiasoa still has pro dreams. His current one will be narrated in Finnish. Tuiasoa said he has signed a contract to play for the Hameenlinna Huskies of Finland’s Maple League. Tuiasoa participated in UH’s pro day last week, but decided “I needed more film if I was going to make a real run at it.” At the suggestion of former Warriors Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea and Makoa Camanse-Stevens — both of whom played in Germany last year […]

Opening day

By Stephen Tsai on March 29, 2018

It sounds strange for this to be opening day for baseball considering the ‘Bows aleeady have played 22 games. But, in a way, the significant part of UH’s season begins today with the Big West opener at UC Irvine. People who know things tell me if the ‘Bows finish with 30-plus wins and second in the Big West, they’ll go to the Regionals. Third place might — might — be good enough. Today’s game begins at 3:30 p.m. Hawaii time […]

Former Warrior comes to the rescue

By Stephen Tsai on March 27, 2018

A former University of Hawaii football player was one of the Good Samaritans who helped rescue a woman whose car went off Kamehameha Highway and into the ocean in Punaluu on Monday night. Aaron Kia, an offensive lineman for the Rainbow Warriors from 2005 through 2009, said he was having a FaceTime conversation with his brother when he heard a car swipe the bushes across the street from his house. “We saw this car in the air flipping (and it) […]

Special assignment

By Stephen Tsai on March 25, 2018

One of the toughest areas to coach is special teams, mostly because special teams are six separate units. And while UH head coaches have been generous in allotting practice sessions to special teams, newly hired Michael Ghobrial is one of the few coordinators to work exclusively with the specialists. In the past, a punter would walk the sidelines alone working on drops. Now Ghobrial accompanies punter Stan Gaudion, offering observations and tips. Ghobrial also will work closely with the kickers. […]

Byrd makes quick impact

By Stephen Tsai on March 24, 2018

Let’s play word association. Clue: Fast receiver. Answer: Byrd is the word. JC transfer Cedric Byrd has caught attention of spectators with his quick first step, quicker cuts and his Hoy-Hoy-trap hands. Byrd, who is expected to complement slotback John Ursua, has excelled in the second slot and run-and-shoot offense, and is making the critics forget … uh … um … what was the name of that receiver who was just here? Byrd, who transferred to UH in January, said […]

Football-baseball merger

By Stephen Tsai on March 23, 2018

In a football-baseball mashup, Nick Rolovich is hosting a gathering in the Bud Light Bullpen at tonight’s UH-Seton Hall game at Les Murakami Stadium. Rolovich made the winning bid during the Pigskin Pigout. The list of invitees includes coaches, trainers, equipment managers and maintenance workers. The heckling should be unique. * * * * * Today marked the end of mini camp, the first three days of the Warriors’ spring football training. The Warriors resume practicing on Tuesday, April 3, […]
