Warrior Beat: Q visits the ‘Bows

By Stephen Tsai on August 30, 2018

Quincy Smith, a key member of the UH basketball team that advanced to the round of 32 in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, visited with the Rainbow Warriors today. Smith said he will be playing in Lithuania this coming season. It is the same league where LaMelo Ball and LiAngelo Ball played this past year. Smith started all 34 UH games in 2015-2016. He scored a career-high 19 points in the opening-round upset of California. * * * * * The […]

Warrior Beat: 2 freshmen to boost defense

By Stephen Tsai on August 29, 2018

Freshman defensive backs Khoury Bethley and Alaka‘i Mashima are expected to earn playing time in Saturday’s home opener against Navy. Both players were used on special teams against Colorado State. “Those are two young players who do a good job,” defensive coordinator Corey Batoon said. Bethley, who is 5-10 and 200 pounds, is a 2018 graduate of Don Lugo High in Chino, Calif. Mashima is a 2017 Punahou School graduate who joined the Warriors after succeeding at a walk-on tryout. […]

Derby’s blast from the past

By Brian McInnis on August 28, 2018

A few years ago, former University of Hawaii football player Brian Derby put together a special tribute to days long gone. Derby, an offensive lineman at UH from 1981 to 1985, compiled a video slideshow of his era, broken up into five parts. Derby was coach at Damien in 2007 and has run camps for O-linemen for years. For a nostalgic experience of the Dick Tomey era of Rainbow Warrior football, players like Al and Niko Noga, Rich Miano and […]

Warrior Beat: McDonald eludes sack

By Stephen Tsai on August 28, 2018

Upon further review, quarterback Cole McDonald had a better opening weekend than first thought. Not only did he account for five touchdowns in his first start in a 43-34 victory over Colorado State, but he also kept perfect his record of never having been sacked in a UH uniform. McDonald was ruled to have been sacked during the game. But the Warriors appealed, insisting that it was a designed quarterback draw. CSU officials agreed, and changed it to a tackle […]

Warrior Beat: Gnat-ural defender

By Stephen Tsai on August 27, 2018

A long, long time ago, the Utah basketball team was looking for a way to defend Chris Gaines, Hawaii’s Harden-esque guard. Gaines was a dual threat with smooth driving lay-ins and an accurate outside shot. Instead of matching eyeball-to-eyeball with 6-foot-3 Gaines, the Utes summoned 5-9 Jimmy Soto. Soto held Gaines in check with hand-checks, swiping moves and just being an irritant. Soto played the man, not the ball, and Gaines never got into a rhythm. The Utes won the […]

McDonald’s starting debut best by a UH run-and-shoot QB

By Dave Reardon on August 26, 2018

Before Cole McDonald on Saturday at Colorado State, only three other University of Hawaii quarterbacks were on the winning side in their first start in the run-and-shoot offense. And Jason Whieldon is the only besides McDonald to achieve that in UH’s first game of the season. The other two — debut winners in midseason — were Shane Austin and David Graves. Austin is the only besides McDonald to win on the road in his first chance to start. In the […]

Clock management: UH vs. CSU

By Billy Hull on August 26, 2018

Hawaii kicker Ryan Meskell saved the Rainbow Warriors from a potentially heartbreaking situation. With Hawaii ahead 40-34 against Colorado State and on the verge of closing out a giant upset to start the 2018 season on Saturday, the Rainbow Warriors looked to have the game wrapped up when quarterback Cole McDonald converted a third-and-3 with a 10-yard pass to John Ursua to move the chains. There were three minutes left in the game and the Rams had already used their […]

Warrior Beat: Warriors won opener the hard way

By Stephen Tsai on August 26, 2018

FORT COLLINS >> When a considerable underdog pulls off an upset, the way the Warriors did yesterday, it would be easy to blame the oddsmakers for getting it wrong. The thing is, the oddsmakers got it right. The Warriors deserved to be underdogs. They faced survivor’s guilt when they departed the islands while a hurricane approached. They were squished in the back third of a commercial flight. Any other Division I head coach have a seat in the 39th row? […]
