Warrior Beat: Warriors return to practice

By Stephen Tsai on November 8, 2018

After a four-day break, the Warriors resumed practicing this evening. The Warriors, who have a bye this weekend, began the 90-minute workout in late afternoon and ended under the lights at the Ching Athletic Complex. The drills were light contact, although they probably will intensify for Friday’s practice. “I’m refreshed,” slotback John Ursua said. “It feels good to be able to have a bye and take my mind off a little bit and refocus what our goal is now as […]

Warrior Beat: Hoops opener approaches; football coaches searching for prospects

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2018

The basketball ‘Bows’ season-opening opponent — Portland — is scheduled to arrive in town this afternoon. The Pilots return six of their top seven players from last year, including Marcus Shaver, a guard who has spent time in Hawaii and was a one-time UH recruit. (His father has a business here.) Hugh Hogland is a 6-10 post player from ‘Iolani School. The Rainbow Classic opens Friday, with North Texas and Humboldt State at 4:30 p.m. and UH and Portland at […]

Warrior Beat: Tavai will miss rest of season

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2018

After each game the past two seasons, Jahlani Tavai would emerge from the postgame locker room and answer questions, any questions. Sometimes he would speak with a group of reporters, sometimes just one. Often he still would be wearing the white long-sleeved Under Armour shirt stained with the game’s wear and tear. Tavai was a leader in offseason conditioning (sometimes brining the water cooler), in practices, in games, and after games. He took the blame for losses and gave credit […]

Manuwai remembered for his deeds, others’ words

By Dave Reardon on November 4, 2018

That description of gentle giant gets thrown around a lot when we talk about behemoth football players. And it is true that Vince Manuwai, who died Sunday at age 38, was very big and very kind. One of his teammates, defensive back Jacob Espiau, put it best. “Never been picked up and mauled so bad by an O-lineman in my life. Then picked up and given a hug. We lost a super good braddah,” Espiau posted on Facebook upon the […]

Warrior Beat: Vince Manuwai dies at 38

By Stephen Tsai on November 4, 2018

The Warriors’ fortunes turned on a January night in 1999. Vince Manuwai, then a Farrington High senior, was set to make good on a verbal commitment to Utah. But then after talks with the UH coaches, he opted to be the first member of June Jones‘ initial recruiting class. Manuwai demonstrated strength of body (500-pound bench press) and character. When John Estes was being recruited to UH a few years later, O-line coach Mike Cavanaugh showed videos of Manuwai. “I […]

Aggies run over Rainbow Warriors

By Dave Reardon on November 3, 2018

This one was over early. It wasn’t much of a surprise to most that No. 18 Utah State had few problems clobbering a reeling Hawaii team 56-17 on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. The Aggies blasted out to a 28-3 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way. It’s hard to believe the Rainbow Warriors, with four losses in a row, still have a winning record (6-5). After next week’s bye, they have two chances left — at home against […]

Game Night: Hawaii vs. Utah State

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2018

Utah State overpowers Hawaii, 56-17, tonight at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors suffered their fourth consecutive loss to fall to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the MWC. ——————- Cole McDonald goes deep — 43 yards — to Devan Stubblefield for a TD to cut the deficit to 56-17 witih 43 seconds left in the third quarter. The ensuing two-point pass was overthrown. * * * * * Gerold Bright goes 9 yards up the gut for his third TD of the […]

Football Throwbacks: Utah State

By Brian McInnis on November 3, 2018

There’s throwbacks, and then there’s all-the-way-backs. Today’s edition of Warrior World’s “Football Throwbacks” is decidedly the latter. The first meeting between Hawaii and today’s opponent, Utah State, occurred back in 1927 — representing one of the first all-collegiate matchups to occur on Oahu. USU, ranked No. 18 going into today’s matchup at Aloha Stadium, has decisively gotten the better of UH since the two made the transition from the WAC to the Mountain West. The Aggies are 3-0 in MWC matchups, […]
