Phil Handy has an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time, a skill he demonstrated yet again last NBA season in Toronto. Hawaii football QB Cole McDonald on Maxwell Award watch list

Hawaii quarterback Cole McDonald has drawn the attention of the Maxwell Football Club. McDonald is one of 80 on the Maxwell Award Watch List for the college football player of the year. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, a Saint Louis School graduate, was the 2018 winner. In 2018, his first as a UH starting quarterback, McDonald threw for 3,875 yards (eighth most among NCAAA passers) and 36 touchdowns (sixth). Hawaii women’s basketball: New locker room in progress

The Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball programs undertook significant upgrades of their respective Stan Sheriff Center locker rooms in the 2019 offseason. While the Rainbow Warriors’ new digs are said to be done (and could be showcased in the coming days), those of the Rainbow Wahine still require some work for completion before next season. Hawaii football: Defensive backs put in extra work

The Hawaii football team’s defensive backs had their own player-run workouts this morning at the grass practice field. They worked on footwork, hip movements and identifying routes. Hawaii men’s basketball: Diamond Head Classic pairings announced, UH draws Ball State

The Rainbow Warriors will open against Ball State in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Dec. 22, ESPN Events announced today. Depending on the outcome, the ‘Bows will face either UTEP or Washington. The other first-round pairings are Houston against Portland, and Georgia Tech against Boise State. Ball State returns eight letterwinners from a team that went 16-17 overall (6-12 in the Mid-American Conference). The Cardinals are touring Costa Rica this summer. Hawaii women’s basketball: Sarah Toeaina, Salanoa twins reunite in Pacific Games

A few former Hawaii women’s basketball teammates have reunited on another island. Four-year Rainbow Wahine players Sarah Toeaina and Lahni and Leah Salanoa are teammates competing for American Samoa in the 2019 Pacific Games, an Olympic-style multi-sport competition between island nations and territories of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia held every four years.
