Hawaii volleyball: Rainbow Wahine, Warriors earn AVCA Academic Award

Hawaii was one of 198 women’s teams and 19 men’s teams to receive the AVCA Team Academic Award. Teams had to maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. A record 1,126 schools received the award in 10 divisions: Women’s NCAA DI, DII and DIII, NAIA, two-year and NCCAA; collegiate men; collegiate beach; and high school girls and boys. According to Twitter, the Rainbow Wahine have a 2021 oral commit from Mia Johnson who plays for Houston Stellar. Just putting the year down makes me feel old. She’s an all-around player from Clear Falls High in League City, Texas. Hawaii men’s basketball: ‘Bows unveil new locker room

Whistles and wide eyes greeted the latest upgrade for the Hawaii men’s basketball team. When players rounded the wall corner inside their locker room, there was amazement, especially among the returnees who’d used the 25-year-old facilities in place since the Stan Sheriff Center opened in 1994. Hawaii football: Dayton Furuta named Doak Walker preseason candidate; Warriors complete offseason training

On a busy Wednesday, running back Dayton Furuta was named as a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award. The award goes to the college football’s best running back. Ewell Doak Walker II played at Syracuse, and was the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner. He played six seasons of professional football. Behind three former Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, American Samoa ended the 2019 Pacific Games the same way it started competition — by winning with authority. Sarah Toeaina poured in 29 points on 9-for-14 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead her adopted team to a 74-53 win over Fiji on Wednesday night in Samoa (Tuesday in Hawaii). Hawaii athletics facilities: Gym I renovation complete, track in progress

The other half of David Matlin’s “game-changer” upgrades to Hawaii’s basketball and volleyball practice facilities has been realized. That’s what the $9-10 million project was called by the UH athletic director last year. And reality appears to have lived up to vision. Gym I, the ground-level counterpart to the already completed Gym II, was recently unveiled for use by UH student-athletes.
