There was even a visit by reigning Japan high school football champion Kosei Gakuen. >> 2019 FALL CAMP DAY 1 PHOTO GALLERY UH, coming off an 8-6 (5-3 Mountain West) campaign in 2018, lost some difference-makers in slotback John Ursua and linebacker Jahlani Tavai, both of whom were drafted into the NFL. Warrior Beat: Day 1 of Hawaii football training camp

By Stephen Tsai on July 26, 2019

The first day of the Warriors’ training camp is in the book. Of note: > During passing drills, the Warriors ran two sections: Cole McDonald was leading one group, Chevan Cordeiro was guiding the other. McDonald, as expected, is — at this very second — the No. 1 QB. No surprise, of course, given his breakout 2018 season and his selection representing UH at the recent Mountain West Media Days. Cordeiro worked mostly with the younger receivers. Sometimes they did […]

Hawaii football: J.R. Hensley leads intact offensive line

By Brian McInnis on July 26, 2019

It’s a rare advantage in college football to have an offensive line remain intact from one season to the next. Hawaii will try to capitalize on such an opportunity to maximize protection and blocking for Cole McDonald and the rest of the UH backfield in the coming months. Returning left guard J.R. Hensley, one of the Rainbow Warriors’ best communicators, feels strongly about his unit’s chances of doing something special come the season opener vs. Arizona on Aug. 24, and […]

Bowl-eligible Hawaii football is guaranteed a spot in the Hawaii Bowl

By Stephen Tsai on July 24, 2019

HENDERSON, NEV. >> A bowl-eligible Hawaii football team will be guaranteed a berth in the Hawaii Bowl, confirmed Bret Gilliland, the deputy commissioner of the Mountain West Conference. The exception would be if the Warriors were invited to a New Year’s bowl or, beginning next year, the new bowl in Los Angeles. That bowl, which will be played in the stadium being built for the Los Angles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, has the first choice among Mountain West teams. […]

By Brian McInnis on July 23, 2019

A couple of former Hawaii soccer standouts of different eras came together to help bring home a professional championship. Natasha Kai and Sonest Furtado, who played more than a decade apart for the Rainbow Wahine, were among the victorious LA Galaxy Orange County side that won the United Women’s Soccer title, 1-0 over host Calgary Foothills WFC in Canada on Tuesday. The UWS is a semi-pro, 23-team league a step below the National Women’s Soccer League. It was the fourth […]

Hawaii football picked fourth in Mountain West’s West Division

By Stephen Tsai on July 23, 2019

HENDERSON, NEV. >> The media spoke, predicting the Hawaii football team would place fourth in the Mountain West’s six-team West Division. And then head coach Nick Rolovich appealed to a greater source — Samina, a Las Vegas-based tarot-card reader. Samina was Rolovich’s guest at opening day of the Mountain West Media Days in Henderson, Nev. In previous years, Rolovich brought Elvis Presley and Britney Spears impersonators. Despite returning a conference-high 18 starters and earning a first-place vote, the Warriors were […]
