By Cindy Luis on July 30, 2019

Former Hawaii beach all-American Karissa Cook and partner Jace Pardon teamed to win gold at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, on Tuesday. The U.S. pair rallied to beat Argentina 14-21, 22-20, 15-10 — the first time in the tournament that the duo dropped a set. Cook/Pardon defeated Argentina’s defending Pan Am Games champion and two-time Olympian Ana Gallay and her partner Fernanda Pereira, Thick fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean blanketed the hills surrounding the sandy venue in […]

Hawaii football: Specialists Stan Gaudion, Ryan Meskell welcome the action

By Brian McInnis on July 30, 2019

At a typical Hawaii football practice, the specialists — kickers, punters, long snappers and the like — form their own little group in an adjacent grass clearing to hone their craft while the offense and defense clash on the elevated practice field. But when they’re called in for some team-wide special teams work, with the full roster and coaching staff either participating or spectating, that’s their time to shine. It’s not quite action under the bright lights, but as fall camp goes, […]

Hawaii football: Practice No. 4 is shell day

By Stephen Tsai on July 30, 2019

For today’s practice, the Warriors donned shoulder pads for the first time in training camp. That meant an escalation in contact during 11-on-11 situational drills. “It gave us a little taste of what football’s like,” quarterback Cole McDonald said of the two-hour practice on UH’s grass field. During the team segments, the Warriors worked on situations, such as third-down plays with varying lines to gain. McDonald made two highlight-worthy plays. He teamed with Jason-Matthew Sharsh on an 85-yard touchdown. On […]

By Stephen Tsai on July 29, 2019

The basketball player who sank “The Shot” to win the 1987 NCAA Tournament — Indiana’s Keith Smart — attended the Rainbow Warriors’ football practice this morning on UH’s grass fields. Smart’s son, Jared Smart, has been the No. 1 left wideout in the first three practices of training camp. The elder Smart is now an assistant coach with the New York Knicks. * * * * * In an homage to Crane Park hoops, the Warriors’ final session today featured […]

By Cindy Luis on July 28, 2019

A quarter of the U.S. men’s team will be comprised of two former and one current Rainbow Warrior at the Pan American Games in Peru this coming week. Named to the 12-man roster are Kupono Fey (Hawaii 2014-17), who played outside but is the libero; All-America setter Joe Worsley (2016-19) and OH Colton Cowell (entering his redshirt senior season). The same three were on the U.S.’s Pan American Cup team in Mexico in June. Cowell is the only collegiate player […]

Hawaii soccer: UH loses Big West first-teamer Lei Medeiros

By Brian McInnis on July 27, 2019

The Hawaii fall soccer roster went up with a notable absence. It was Leialoha Medeiros, the All-Big West first-team midfielder from Makawao, Maui, who would’ve been a junior and the team’s primary go-to option in 2019. Coach Michele Nagamine told Hawaii Warrior World that Medeiros left the team in the offseason due to personal reasons. “We wish Lei all the best,” Nagamine said Saturday. “Sometimes life gets in the way of soccer, and it’s always about the student-athletes’ well-being and […]

Hawaii football training camp: Day 2

By Stephen Tsai on July 27, 2019

For the second day of training camp, the Warriors again ran a double huddle. This time, the experienced quarterbacks — Cole McDonald, Chevan Cordeiro and Justin Uahinui — were grouped together. Kamali‘i Akina, a transfer from College of San Mateo, and freshmen Boone Abbott and Zach Daniel were in the second group. It was a good strategy. McDonald, Cordeiro and Uahinui are far enough ahead they can focus on their timing and getting prepared for the season. The younger quarterbacks […]

Hawaii football: Jason-Matthew Sharsh prepares to step up

By Brian McInnis on July 27, 2019

Sixteen touchdowns. One-thousand, three-hundred and forty-three yards. That’s what John Ursua did last season for Hawaii on 89 catches. Ursua, who left Manoa a season early, was drafted in the seventh round by the Seattle Seahawks, leaving a hole in the Rainbow Warriors’ offense considerably larger than his 5-foot-10 frame. A single player alone will not likely make up what Ursua did in the run and shoot. One of those who will try to defray his loss is fifth-year senior […]
