The University of Hawaii played host to the visiting Los Angeles Rams for a practice session on Friday afternoon. It was the only practice in the islands for the Rams before they face the Dallas Cowboys in a sold-out NFL preseason game at Aloha Stadium on Saturday. Hawaii men’s tennis: John Nelson retires after 16 years as UH coach

Sixteen-year Hawaii men’s tennis coach John Nelson has retired, UH announced on Thursday. Nelson led UH to WAC tournament titles in back-to-back-to-back years (2008, ’09, ’10), and the 2014 Big West regular-season title. In terms of program ranking, UH topped out under Nelson at No. 35 in the ITA poll in the 2010 season. UH also beat Oklahoma State in the NCAA team tournament first round. Former Hawaii interim head coach Benjy Taylor has been tapped to lead a college basketball program once again. Taylor, who headed up the Rainbow Warriors for the 2014-15 season in the wake of Gib Arnold’s firing (and took the ‘Bows within one game of making the NCAA Tournament), has been named the new head coach at Tuskegee University, according to Hoopdirt’s Adam Nelson. Hawaii men’s volleyball: Patrick Gasman named to NORCECA Championship Cup team

Incoming senior Hawaii middle Patrick Gasman was selected to Team USA’s 14-player roster for the upcoming NORCECA Championship Cup. The assistant coach is Spencer McLachlin (Punahou), current assistant at UCLA. Gasman and Loyola setter Garrett Zolg are the only active college men’s volleyball players on the team. It felt like ol’ times for defensive lineman Alema Kapoi. “It’s good to be out here,” said Kapoi, who transferred from Navy and joined the Warriors on Tuesday. “I haven’t been in pads since Army-Navy all the way back in December.” Kapoi is a 2016 Kamehameha-Kapalama graduate. As a senior, he was named to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State first team. He attended Navy’s prep academy for a year, delaying the start of his NCAA eligibility clock until the 2017 season.
