Hawaii women’s volleyball: Brooke Van Sickle rediscovers love of the game

By Brian McInnis on August 28, 2019

Brooke Van Sickle opened up a recent interview by using an innocuous word, one that could easily be overlooked in the flow of conversation. Fun. She was having fun with her new Hawaii teammates. And for her, that was no small thing. “There are a lot of good personalities, some really fun girls,” said Van Sickle, a springy 5-foot-9 redshirt junior who transferred from Oregon in the offseason. “So on and off the court it’s a really fun time. I […]

Hawaii football: Despite attendance lag, Rolovich knows program getting seen

By Brian McInnis on August 27, 2019

It’s more than just the number of butts in the seats, or lack thereof. Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich is thinking expansively on the topic of attendance these days. There were only 20,572 counted through the Aloha Stadium turnstiles for Saturday’s season-opening, nationally televised win over Arizona. Even considering the downward overall trend of attendance for UH football games for years now, the talk of turnout leading up to the game — a marquee matchup against a Pac-12 opponent — was mentioned […]

Hawaii football’s Pumba Williams made a name for himself

By Stephen Tsai on August 27, 2019

Even before he was born, Manly Williams would be known as “Pumba,” a nickname his older brother chose from “The Lion King.” Growing up, Williams said, “the only people who called me Manly were my mom, my grandpa and my teachers.” After making a tandem tackle to seal the Warriors’ 45-38 victory over Arizona this past weekend, Williams is a household name. Several teams — including Clemson, Georgia, the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills — used the video clip […]

Hawaii soccer: San Francisco keeps UH winless in opening tourney

By Brian McInnis on August 26, 2019

A furious second half saw Hawaii fall behind by two goals, then come storming back against San Francisco. The disappointed Rainbow Wahine could not complete the comeback in a 3-2 defeat to the Dons in overtime on Monday afternoon at the UH grass practice field. All-West Coast Conference first-team senior forward Miciah Madison put home the game-winner from 25 yards straightaway in the 94th minute, touching off a celebration under the visitors tent. >> HAWAII VS. Hawaii football: Quarterbacks coach Stutzmann sees bonus, not controversy

By Dave Reardon on August 26, 2019

Some like to call football the ultimate team game. And the team effort in Hawaii’s 45-38 victory over Arizona on Saturday was evident in many forms. The Warriors made plenty of mistakes, but they bounced back from them enough to beat a team that was favored by 11 points. Teammates picked up each other. Units picked up each other. Guys picked themselves up, like Pumba Williams, the defensive lineman who on the final play kept hustling to make a game-saving […]

Warrior Beat: Egg-cellent outcome for Hawaii football

By Stephen Tsai on August 26, 2019

To the victors go … the omelets. In what has become a protein-filled tradition, the Monday after each football victory, the Warriors are treated to an omelet of their choice at the training-table breakfast. (All student-athletes eligible for training table also are allowed to partake in the omelets.) That was the case this morning when omelets were served in addition to the usual buffet of scrambled eggs, various meats and poultry, fruits, vegetables, and so forth. Following Saturday’s victory over […]
