Hawaii men’s basketball: Ahmed Ali leaving for health reasons

By Stephen Tsai on October 17, 2019

Guard Ahmed Ali has a health issue that will prevent him from playing for the UH basketball team this season. Ali, who was born and reared in Toronto, played two seasons at a junior college and started 24 games for Washington State during the 2018-19 season. He transferred to UH this summer. Ali said he was notified of his condition just before the start of the Rainbow Warriors’ third practice of training camp. Ali said he is withdrawing from UH […]

Hawaii football: Exploring all options

By Stephen Tsai on October 16, 2019

It was a deja vu moment when Va‘a Niumatalolo took snaps at quarterback today at UH’s grass practice field. Niumatalolo, a graduate assistant, is the son of Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo, a former UH assistant coach and quarterback. The younger Niumatalolo has been helpful this week as the Warriors prepare for Air Force’s ground-oriented, triple-option offense. The elder Niumatalolo played and coached in UH’s version of the triple-option under offensive coordinator Paul Johnson. * * * * * The […]

Stan Sheriff Center: Memories of the Yuval Katz Hawaii men’s volleyball era

By Cindy Luis on October 16, 2019

Some teams stand out more than others when it comes to memories and the Yuval Katz-led Warriors of 1995-96 are among the most memorable. It was the perfect storm of the brand-new arena meeting charismatic players who kept winning … a lot. Some of the myths surrounding the Warriors seem too good to be true but some of them are. Aaron Wilton did end up in a laundry cart, under towels, and was pushed past fans who waited out in […]

Hawaii football: Valuing possessions vs. Air Force not optional

By Brian McInnis on October 15, 2019

Make each one count. Each one being possessions. That’s the message — offensively, anyway — as Hawaii prepares for Air Force in a second straight cross-divisional Mountain West matchup at 5 p.m. Saturday at Aloha Stadium. “Ground Force” has a way of making the seconds tick all the way down on teams with its triple-option offense. The Falcons dominated time of possession, 39:29 to Fresno State’s 20:31, a 43-24 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Give it away, or punt […]

Stan Sheriff Center: Memories of Hawaii volleyball’s Shoji becoming the all-time winningest coach

By Cindy Luis on October 14, 2019

There were so many milestones in Dave Shoji’s illustrious 42-season career that Hawaii didn’t do a big celebration for most. Except for perhaps the 1,000th victory, the climb up the coaching wins list almost was treated as a footnote, an “oh by the way” congratulatory announcement at the end a match that marked another century number. Some of it might have been what some considered the bachi of 1992 where there was a cake for what was supposed to be […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football hosts Air Force, volleyball 2 at home, soccer hits road

By Brian McInnis on October 14, 2019

In this week’s edition of the Forecast, conference races have heated up for the three primary Hawaii sports in action. UH football is licking its wounds from a 59-37 beating at No. 14 Boise State, and has to turn right around and play a very good Air Force team that spanked Fresno State on Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors are still in great shape in the Mountain West’s West Division, though, if they can pull off a win this weekend against […]

Stan Sheriff Center: Hawaii basketball started 2005 cramping Michigan State’s style

By Dave Reardon on October 14, 2019

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo tried to compliment the University of Hawaii team that had just romped over his squad, 84-62, in the 2005 season-opener for both. But he did not have kind words for the fans at the Stan Sheriff Center. “That’s the maddest I’ve ever been as a coach in college,” Izzo said. The source of his displeasure was some fans booing when MSU player Shannon Brown — one of four Spartans reported to have left the […]
