Stan Sheriff Center: Hawaii basketball beating No. 2 Kansas is No. 1 in our poll, but you probably knew that

By Dave Reardon on October 19, 2019

If you know much about Hawaii sports of the past quarter century, you probably figured out before today that the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team upset of No. 2 Kansas on Dec. 30, 1997 would be No. 1 in our voting of the most memorable athletic events at the Stan Sheriff Center since its opening on Oct. 21, 1994. We recount that game in today’s Star-Advertiser, and there’s a complete list of the top 10 and games that also […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Wahine show off new killer instinct

By Brian McInnis on October 19, 2019

Whatever was said in the three-hour post-match meeting between coach Robyn Ah Mow and her players up at San Luis Obispo, Calif., seems to have made a lasting impression. UH made short work of UC Riverside on Friday night, rolling through the Highlanders in 86 minutes, 25-17, 25-18, 25-12. Norene Iosia had a potent double-double (19 digs, 17 assists), Amber Igiede put down 11 kills on 14 swings and Hanna Hellvig and McKenna Ross added 10 kills apiece. Sky Williams […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Young guns pressed into service

By Brian McInnis on October 18, 2019

Kameron Ng saw an opening. He sprinted upcourt, the ball at his fingertips. The defense was far from set. An opening presented itself on the left side of the lane. The guard pressed his advantage and, once the defense collapsed, he noticed the weak-side defender covered down, toward the basket. Ng rifled it across the lane to the right corner, where an open Justin Webster caught it and put it up and in for three points without hesitation. “I just […]

Stan Sheriff Center: Whitlock’s BYU beater at the buzzer stands alone for Hawaii basketball

By Dave Reardon on October 18, 2019

When Tes Whitlock hit a shot beyond 20 feet as time expired to beat BYU in 1995, it was not the first or last decisive buzzer bomb in University of Hawaii basketball history. Trevor Ruffin, Bobby Nash, Petras Balocka, Hauns Brereton (and Joston Thomas), Garrett Jefferson, Keith Shamburger, Roderick Bobbitt, Noah Allen and Leland Green are among those who also made big shots to win games or extend them as the clock ran out. But Whitlock’s stands out alone to […]

Hawaii soccer: For once, Wahine in favorable position on road

By Brian McInnis on October 18, 2019

UPDATE: Hawaii went on the road and beat UC Riverside 2-0 to improve to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since the WAC championship season of 2007. After a scoreless first half, UH got goals from Kelci Sumida in the 55th minute (assisted by Kayla Watanabe) and from Eliza Ammendolia in the 88th (from Daelenn Tokunaga). UPDATE: Riverside made a stat fix to reflect that Elena Palacios had the assist for Sumida, not Watanabe. It was the team-high-tying […]

Stan Sheriff Center: Memories of 2001-02 Hawaii men’s basketball team

By Cindy Luis on October 17, 2019

I can thank the University of Hawaii sports teams for most of my experiences with snow. Think Rainbow Wahine volleyball in 1983, ’87, ’88 and ’96 (NCAA final fours in Kentucky, Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio) to name a few sub-freezing sites. And then there is black ice. Outside of driving in an almost-blinding snowstorm from Colorado State to Denver International after the Wahine lost in the 2008 regional final to Stanford, the drive on the I-244 in Tulsa might just […]

Stan Sheriff Center: Memories of the 2019 Hawaii men’s volleyball team

By Cindy Luis on October 17, 2019

What the Hawaii men’s volleyball team of 2019 was able to do — with its program-record 28 victories and NCAA-record 74 consecutive sets-won — will be hard to replicate. So, too, will be the noise level on April 20 for the Big West tournament championship match against Long Beach State at the Stan Sheriff Center. I was the beat writer for UH men’s basketball for a number of seasons, including 1997-98 for what most consider the program’s signature victory, the […]
