Hawaii men’s basketball: Webster sees point guard duty against Chaminade

By Brian McInnis on October 31, 2019

The question of what happens when Drew Buggs needs a breather was apparently answered on Wednesday night. Hawaii will put the ball in the hands of true freshman Justin Webster. It was baptism by fire for Webster, the Rainbow Warriors’ new secondary point guard, in an 83-66 preseason exhibition victory over Division II neighbor Chaminade at the Stan Sheriff Center. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. Men’s basketball updates: Hawaii vs. Chaminade

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2019

FINAL: The Rainbow Warriors overcame a sloppy start to defeat Chaminade, 83-66, in a basketball exhibition tonight in the Stan Sheriff Center. The ‘Bows dominated the boards, constructing a 53-31 advantage, including 22-7 on the offensive glass. Zigmars Raimo led the ‘Bows with 19 points and Samuta Avea added 18. * * * * * UH’s dominance on the boards continues. In one sequence the ‘Bows missed three shots, chased down each of them, and finished the extended possession Zigmars […]

Hawaii football: Allow Kumoku Noa to reintroduce himself

By Christian Shimabuku on October 30, 2019

Kumoku Noa reintroduced himself to Hawaii football fans in a big way during last Saturday’s win at New Mexico. In his first game action since 2017, he broke away for a 54-yard touchdown from Cole McDonald in the first quarter, setting the tone in a much-needed 45-31 victory. Noa was not cleared for any other game this season in what was described to Star-Advertiser UH football beat writer Stephen Tsai as “ailments and personal problems.” The Rainbow Warriors held a […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Freshman Davies’ debut cut short

By Brian McInnis on October 30, 2019

Olivia Davies made a good first impression in her limited time on the Stan Sheriff Center floor on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for Davies and Hawaii, it’s not clear when the true freshman will get a chance at a second. The 5-foot-9 guard went down clutching her left leg after playing just four first-quarter minutes in the Rainbow Wahine’s 76-71 exhibition victory over Hawaii Pacific. She returned to the bench in the second half on crutches and with her leg heavily […]

Hawaii basketball set for exhibition against Chaminade

By Stephen Tsai on October 29, 2019

The men’s basketball team will offer a preview when it plays host to Chaminade in an exhibition Wednesday night in the Stan Sheriff Center. This has been a difficult preseason for the Rainbow Warriors. Because of a late eligibility ruling from the NCAA, guard Junior Madut won’t join the ‘Bows until January. Washington State transfer Ahmed Ali withdrew from school because of a medical condition. Five players have missed practices because of injuries, including 7-foot post Owen Hulland, who is […]

Hawaii football: quarterback Cole McDonald plans to ‘come back next year’

By Dave Reardon on October 29, 2019

Cole McDonald went a long way on that 76-yard touchdown run in Saturday’s 45-31 victory at New Mexico. But Hawaii’s fourth-year junior quarterback said after practice Tuesday he has no plan — at least at this point — of going any distance from the UH roster before his senior season. “I intend to stay in school and come back next year,” McDonald said. Of course a lot can change between now and next spring and the NFL Draft. And at […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Freshman Calhoun tabbed as starting point guard

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2019

The lineup is coming together a bit for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. Eighth-year Rainbow Wahine coach Laura Beeman hinted at some of her rotation before practice on Monday afternoon, a day before the Wahine were to play Hawaii Pacific in a 7:30 exhibition at the Stan Sheriff Center. It sounds like at least two of the team’s four freshmen will get a chance to make an impact. That’s especially true for 5-foot-5 Nae Nae Calhoun, of Riverside, Calif., who […]

Rainbow Forecast: Huge week for Hawaii football, volleyball, soccer; basketball teams host exhibitions

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2019

As fate would have it, this week aligned for Hawaii’s three primary fall sports in one sense — all three face pivotal conference matchups that have championship implications. Football, coming off its 45-31 win at New Mexico — the first time UH won in Albuquerque since 1987 — hits the crucial portion of its schedule starting this week with the first of four Mountain West West Division opponents, rival Fresno State. If UH (5-3, 2-2 MWC) manages to win out in those […]
