Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Fresno State

By Brian McInnis on November 2, 2019

On a Friday night in Halawa in October of 2001, it was peak Hawaii-Fresno State. “Magic” it would be described by no fewer than two sportswriters. Of the 51 all-time meetings between the Rainbow Warriors and the Bulldogs going into tonight’s clash at Aloha Stadium, none may be better remembered on the Hawaii side than the Oct. 6, 2001 encounter (with apologies to the overtime clash in 1999 and the 2007 battle, among others). Rolovich. Lelie. Jackson. Those were just […]

Hawaii baseball: 53-game schedule includes national champ Vanderbilt

By Stephen Tsai on November 2, 2019

The Hawaii baseball team announced an ambitious 2020 schedule that features a road series against defending championship Vanderbilt. The Rainbow Warriors will play 53 games, including a three-weekend stretch in which Pac-12 opponents Washington State and Oregon will bookend the road trip against Vanderbilt. The ‘Bows also will embark on a eight-game, 14-day road trip in April. That trip will include nonconference games against Cal State Bakersfield, which joins the Big West the following season, and Pepperdine. The ‘Bows play […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Okino, Wahine outlast Ruddins, UCSB

By Brian McInnis on November 2, 2019

For a few moments, it appeared that UC Santa Barbara hitter Lindsey Ruddins was going to single-handedly carry the Gauchos to a crucial road win at Hawaii. Fortunately for UH, and most unfortunately for UCSB, Friday night’s match at the Stan Sheriff Center lasted much longer than a few moments. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. UC SANTA BARBARA The Gauchos’ senior hitter had season highs in both kills (27) and swings (80) in hitting .275, but she wore down in […]

Hawaii soccer: Irvine loss clinches Big West tournament berth for Wahine

By Brian McInnis on November 1, 2019

For the first time in its eight years as a member of the Big West Conference, the Hawaii soccer team is through to the league’s postseason tournament. After UH (6-7-3, 4-1-2 BWC) put itself on the cusp of qualifying with Thursday’s 3-2 win at UC Davis, the rest was taken care of for the Wahine when UC Irvine lost in overtime at Cal Poly, 3-2, on Friday. “We were all watching at our hotel. Oh jeez. My heart,” coach Michele […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Bob Nash to have jersey retired

By Brian McInnis on November 1, 2019

It’s about time. Hawaii hoops legend Bob Nash will become the first Rainbow Warriors player to have his jersey formally retired, the school announced on Friday. Nash represented dependability as a person and as a player for the program spanning decades. UH will conduct the ceremony on Feb. 15 against UC Irvine. It will be part of UH’s 100th season initiative in 2019-20. Special themes for the Fabulous Five — of which Nash was a prominent member — and the 100th […]

Hawaii soccer: Everything on the table

By Brian McInnis on October 31, 2019

FINAL: Hawaii came up with a huge road victory in a wild, hostile match, 3-2 at UC Davis. The Rainbow Wahine had to rally from down 2-1 with 34 minutes left when Davis’ Janae Gonzalez put in her second penalty-kick goal of the match, and Kayla Ryan delivered with her team-best sixth and seventh goals of the season on set-ups by teammates. “To be perfectly honest, I was just really impressed with the team and their composure and their mental […]
