Hawaii men’s basketball: No pressure for methodical Rainbow Warriors against Portland State

By Dave Reardon on November 15, 2019

Chris Gerlufsen’s first words to reporters after Hawaii’s 83-75 victory over Portland State on Friday indicated that UH’s win was hard-earned. “Nothing is easy,” Gerlufsen said as he looked at the box score, and then the cameras. “We knew it was gonna be a 40-minute dogfight.” The Vikings apply relentless pressure, and sometimes it worked, forcing UH turnovers. Hawaii gave Portland State a lot of chances — first and second chances. But the Vikings didn’t take advantage of enough of […]

Hawaii football: As Rainbow Warriors history shows, a ‘quarterback controversy’ isn’t necessarily a bad thing

By Dave Reardon on November 15, 2019

If you take the words “quarterback controversy” and just run with it, it could mean a lot of different things. For example, should Mason Rudolph also be punished for his part in the fight at the end of Thursday’s game between the Steelers and the Browns that ended with Myles Garrett hitting Rudolph on the head with his own helmet? It’s a “controversy,” and it involves a “quarterback,” right? OK, I know, that’s too literal of an interpretation … something […]

Hawaii soccer: Michele Nagamine lauds 5-player signing class

By Brian McInnis on November 15, 2019

Just a couple weeks after the completion of the 2019 soccer season, Hawaii announced the backbone of its recruiting class for 2020. Though there are about nine months before next fall season, and more players will inevitably be added, the five announced by UH Thursday night — local players Amber Gilbert and Kyanah Blas and mainlanders Chelsey Stock, Maya Gonzalez and Fabiola Zamora — will comprise the bulk of the newcomers. The 2020 class is coach Michele Nagamine’s 10th at UH. […]

Hawaii men’s volleyball: Rainbow Warriors release 2020 schedule

By Cindy Luis on November 15, 2019

Like most teams, the Hawaii men’s volleyball team has had problems filling its allotted 28 dates. The Rainbow Warriors have 29 matches, including two exhibitions with Nittaidai of Japan. Alumni match is Jan. 24. Joked with coach Charlie Wade that they are revisiting the ghost of 2018 with nearly the identical schedule (at CSUN for 2 and then Pepperdine) that led to three road losses, something some have pointed to as one of the reasons the Warriors didn’t get the […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Roderick Bobbitt presses on as professional

By Brian McInnis on November 15, 2019

Roderick Bobbitt knows a thing or two about the press that the Hawaii basketball team will face tonight against Portland State. He was a part of it. Or, rather, the version of it that PSU coach Barret Peery employed at Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College when he and Bobbitt were there in 2013-14. “It’s going to be good. I came to try to spoil my former coach’s visit to Hawaii,” said Bobbitt, the point guard of UH’s 2015-16 NCAA Tournament […]

Loyola Marymount pulls away late to defeat Rainbow Wahine basketball team

By Christian Shimabuku on November 13, 2019

The Hawaii women’s basketball team kept up with Loyola Marymount for three quarters on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, but the Rainbow Wahine couldn’t keep pace for one more in a 65-51 loss. With things knotted up at 27 at halftime, LMU outscored the Wahine 20-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away. After winning its season opener against San Diego State last Tuesday, UH dropped to 1-1. The Lions (1-1) picked up their first win after losing their season […]
