Hawaii men’s volleyball: How have Rainbow Warriors fared opening season as No. 1?

By Brian McInnis on January 3, 2020

When the Hawaii men’s volleyball team opens the 2020 season tonight against Charleston, it will do so as the AVCA preseason No. 1 team for the first time in program history. The Rainbow Warriors lost some notable players from last year’s NCAA runner-up squad, but still have weapons aplenty to turn to like Rado Parapunov, Colton Cowell and Patrick Gasman. As Ferd Lewis noted in today’s column on men’s volleyball, the AVCA preseason poll has only existed since 2007. In […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Teee Williams, Charlie Brande among Southern California Indoor Hall of Fame inductees

By Cindy Luis on January 2, 2020

Happy New Year Teee Williams-Slacanin, the AVCA Player of the Year in 1987 and (co) 89, as well as Dave Shoji’s former assistant Charlie Brande are among the 15 who will be inducted into the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame in May. Williams was a three-time All-American (likely would have been four if the NCAA didn’t have that ridiculous prop 48 in place that cost her a year). She helped Hawaii to the 1987 NCAA title and 1988 […]

University of Hawaii athletics: Top 12 moments of 2019

By Brian McInnis on December 31, 2019

The calendar year 2019 was an eventful one for many University of Hawaii sports. There were conference championships in play for several and some notable NCAA tournament runs. Without further ado, here are 12 of the biggest moments spanning UH sports in 2019, the final year of this decade. The order of some of the below events and moments is subjective, of course, and you might have one or two in mind that is not here. Feel free to add […]

Who were the most notable Hawaii sports figures of the decade?

By Dave Reardon on December 31, 2019

Ten years ago, I wrote that Michelle Wie was the most notable sports figure with Hawaii ties of the just-completed decade. The list for the years 2010-2019 is quite a bit different — and Wie, who was a PGA pro in her prime years, only makes this one as an honorable mention. 10. Gerald Oda spent the entire decade — and many years prior — teaching youngsters the right way to play baseball and handle themselves on and off the […]

Rainbow Forecast: New Year heralds return of Hawaii men’s volleyball

By Brian McInnis on December 30, 2019

How recent it felt that the sold-out Stan Sheriff Center rocked like rarely felt before and the Rainbow Warrior volleyball team hoisted the Big West championship trophy after an epic five-set battle against rival Long Beach State. That was April 20, the capper to the home schedule of #WarriorBall19. UH went on to lose a tough one to The Beach in the NCAA championship at The Pyramid, but the memories of that home matchup endure. Well, it’s just about to […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Rainbow Warriors roll Maine in Eran Ganot’s return

By Brian McInnis on December 29, 2019

It was high drama in the Stan Sheriff Center in Eran Ganot’s return to the sidelines. Would Hawaii — which turned Sunday night’s contest against Maine into a blowout early in the second half — achieve one of the most lopsided victories in program history? In fact, they would, as the 40-point margin of the 91-51 win tied for seventh all-time in the record books. It was the most emphatic win over a Division I program since an 85-41 win over Oregon […]

Men’s basketball: Hawaii vs. Maine

By Stephen Tsai on December 29, 2019

In the most one-sided victory of the season, Eddie Stansberry scored 21 and Samuta Avea added 17 as Hawaii overpowered Maine, 91-51, today in the Stan Sheriff Center. Stansberry connected on two of 28 3-point shots in the Diamond Head Classic, but he hit his first two treys as the ‘Bows raced to a 10-0 lead. The game marked Eran Ganot’s return to the sideline after 51 days medical leave. * * * * * The ‘Bows have hit 10 […]
