Making the chance LaCount

By Brian McInnis on October 9, 2017

Trevor LaCount thought his college basketball career was done. Completely over. The SoCal native had wrapped up two years at Ventura (Calif.) College, having averaged a modest 7.5 points and 5.1 rebounds as a sophomore. LaCount was looking ahead to the completion of his undergraduate studies, ideally at a warm place that fit his persona. Surfing, diving, and the like. So he headed out to Hawaii this summer with the goal of obtaining a communications degree. He still had the […]

By Brian McInnis on October 8, 2017

LIVE UPDATES HERE FINAL — UC Irvine 3, Hawaii 2. Hawaii has a few chances in desperation mode in the final few minutes but cannot convert. The Eaters turtle the ball in the corner and run out the clock. Sixth straight BWC defeat for UH going back to 2016. 80th minute — Tia Furuta nearly puts in a rebound goal with a header but the ball shoots wide. At the other end, Lex Mata with a nice save in the open field […]

New veterans

By Brian McInnis on October 6, 2017

Through about a week of full Hawaii men’s basketball practices, it’s been impressive to watch some of the team’s former fresh faces take commanding roles during drills. Granted, the ratio of returnees to newcomers — 2 to 1 — is stacked in favor of the letterwinners, in stark contrast to this time last year. There hasn’t been one guy — save perhaps Mike Thomas — who’s been dominant. Instead, a host of guys — Thomas, Leland Green, Gibson Johnson, Jack Purchase, Brocke […]

Fast start to Rainbow Wahine practice

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 3, 2017

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team got off to a running start in their first full practice of the new season. Laura Beeman set the tone and pace early in the opening practice of her sixth season as head coach Monday afternoon in UH’s Gym 2. “We started out practice with a lot of transition, getting up and down the floor, working our conditioning,” Beeman said. “We have to get up and down the floor this year, so everyone’s got to […]

Bows open full practices

By Brian McInnis on September 29, 2017

Continuity was the word of the day as the Hawaii basketball team opened the first of 30 full practices before its Nov. 10 season opener. The Rainbow Warriors are certainly not identical to last year’s 14-16 (8-8 Big West) squad. But compared to the previous offseason — when basically the entire roster was replaced — the carryover feels substantial. All 14 players were present for the offseason workout program. “We’re a little further along than we were at this point […]

UH media day check-in / Clippers arrive

By Brian McInnis on September 26, 2017

The Rainbow Warrior basketball team suited up together for the first time on Monday. But don’t get too excited — it was just for the media, and full practices haven’t even started yet. That comes Friday. All 14 ‘Bows (plus coaching staff) made themselves available in uniform. Here’s the team by general position — point/combo guards, wings, and bigs. ——————— On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Clippers opened preseason training camp at the Stan Sheriff Center. The UH coaching staff and about […]

UH soccer gears up for Big West

By Brian McInnis on September 24, 2017

It’s a safe bet the Hawaii soccer team won’t take home some weekly hardware Monday, a first in three weeks. That’s through no fault of the Rainbow Wahine; they were completely off from game action for the past week after winning their last three nonconference road games. UH (5-4) opens BWC play at UC Davis (1-9) on Thursday. The Wahine spent the week resting up and tuning up for the Aggies and a follow-up game at always-tough Long Beach State […]

Hoops Tipoff Event, Round 2

By Brian McInnis on September 12, 2017

The Hawaii basketball team hopes to parlay last preseason’s successful season tip-off fundraiser, a debut for its kind, into an annual shindig. UH announced the 2017 follow-up for Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center, starting at 5:30 p.m. with drinks and a silent auction followed by dinner. Individual tickets are $125 while full tables may be purchased for $1,500. Last year’s event featured a stylish setup on the floor of the arena, and a stage for players and […]
