Gameday: North Dakota

By Brian McInnis on November 12, 2017

They’re not the Fighting Sioux or the Fighting Nobodies. They’re the Fighting Hawks. North Dakota feels established with its new nickname and identity coming off some controversy in recent seasons. (They had to ditch the Fighting Sioux name because it was deemed offensive, and have been the Fighting Hawks since 2015 after going without any name at all for a few years. But if you have a guy named Geno Crandall, who’s able to go for 37 points in a […]

Gameday: Arkansas-Pine Bluff

UH takes on nonconference scheduling staple Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the 2017-18 season opener.

Who gets the nod vs. HPU?

By Brian McInnis on November 1, 2017

Who’s it gonna be? The Hawaii starting lineup and rotation for tonight’s exhibition against Hawaii Pacific is anyone’s best guess. You could see many as nine different Rainbow Warriors getting the nod for the first five, based on who’s played with the first group in recent days. The ‘Bows have indulged in some lineup potpourri, sometimes with as many as three guys with UH starting experience playing on the second unit. Regardless of who’s out there first, UH’s anticipation for […]

2017 soccer season in review

By Brian McInnis on October 30, 2017

Hawaii was widely viewed around the Big West as a rebuilding team going into the 2017 soccer season. Turned out, for good reasons. The Rainbow Wahine faded down the stretch once again and were not in contention for the Big West tournament going into the final week of the season. UH got drubbed 3-0 and 4-0 in road losses at Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside, bringing things to a merciful end at 6-10-1 and 1-6-1 in the BWC. The […]

Wahine endure G&W scrimmage

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2017

The 2017-18 preseason has been all about resisting attrition for the Rainbow Wahine basketball team. That was on display Friday night, as UH put on its women’s Green and White intrasquad scrimmage at the Stan Sheriff Center and suited up only 11 players. That meant there was only one available substitute at any point during three eight-minute periods of 5-on-5 play. “No. 1, I want to stay healthy. I think that’s what every coach wants in the preseason,” said UH […]

A trip down memory lane

By Brian McInnis on October 27, 2017

Eran Ganot talks all the time about the history of the Hawaii basketball program, and honoring it. A lot of times doing so is an intangible act, a frame of mind. Not this time. This time it feels very tangible. The Rainbow Warriors recently completed a Ganot project — spearheaded by assistant coach John Montgomery and SID Neal Iwamoto — to honor all 13 of UH’s past NCAA or NIT teams by giving each a unique plaque. They went up […]

‘Bows picked fifth

By Brian McInnis on October 26, 2017

Hawaii basketball was picked to land right where it left off in 2016-17 — fifth. But hey, that beats the Big West prediction put forth last year, when the ‘Bows were tabbed eighth with basically nobody coming back. UH’s 2017-18 preseason poll placement still might be a little low, but it’s not terribly surprising given a perceived lack of singular star power (no ‘Bows were picked to the preseason all-conference team). You kind of got the sense that the Big […]

Ganot breaks news of Aussie trip

By Brian McInnis on October 25, 2017

Eran Ganot couldn’t help himself. The night was going so well at the second annual Hawaii basketball Tip-off fundraiser event. Sold-out tables, a rollicking atmosphere and arena floor full (about 500) of diehard fans eager to donate their hard-earned cash toward the cause. There was even a notable return in the form of former coach Bob Nash. Ganot, speaking on stage, called it the biggest fundraiser in program history, to loud applause. Then he gave the fans an added, unexpected, […]
