UH-BYU a possible 2019 Hawaii Bowl matchup

By Ferd Lewis on October 15, 2018

Although the schedule says the University of Hawaii isn’t booked to play Brigham Young again until 2024, they could be seeing each other a whole lot sooner. ESPN Events, which owns and operates the Hawaii Bowl, said the Cougars are “currently slotted for participation in the 2019 Hawaii Bowl” opposite the Mountain West Conference representative at Aloha Stadium. The game has had revolving representatives from Conference USA and the American Athletic Conference opposite the MWC. But ESPN also has a […]

Warrior Beat: Running theme

By Stephen Tsai on October 15, 2018

This season, the Warriors have had uneven results in defending the run. Against the triple-option, they yielded 326 rushing yards to Navy and 303 to Army. But they also dominated Duquesne (24 rushing yards) and San Jose State (39). Playing what Nick Rolovich referred to as “big-boy football,” BYU amassed 280 rushing yards. In the first eight games: • Colorado State — 116 rushing yards, 4.64 yards per carry • Navy — 326 yards, 6.65 ypc • Rice — 147 […]

Crunching Numbers: 6-2 still looks good

By Dave Reardon on October 14, 2018

Since the University of Hawaii started playing football in 1909, it has started the season with a 6-2 record 15 times, including the current team. In 1920 and 1962, UH also finished at 6-2, since it only played eight games. Incidentally, in ’62, opponents included teams such as the Kaimuki Spartans and Tantalus Rangers. In ’20, one loss was to Outrigger Canoe Club, which hasn’t been on the schedule in a very long time. But the other team Hawaii lost […]

Warrior Beat: Lessons from Provo

By Stephen Tsai on October 14, 2018

PROVO >> Every game is supposed to be a teaching moment. Here’s what we learned from UH’s 49-23 loss to BYU: > Counter moves: In the lobby of the hotel where the Warriors spent the trip, there is a giant chess board, which served as decorative and metaphorical. Teams have had enough video evidence of the capabilities of the Warriors’ hybrid offense. The past few opponents have devised counter measures. The continuing challenge for the Warriors is to counter the […]

Cougars maul Warriors

By Dave Reardon on October 13, 2018

It was an intriguing matchup going in: A slumping Brigham Young team hosting an overachieving Hawaii squad. But the Cougars took the mystery out of it early, scoring the game’s first four touchdowns on the way to a 49-23 rout after two disappointing losses. UH (6-2) is now 0-10 on the road against BYU (4-3), and will have to wait until at least next week’s home game against Nevada to clinch a bowl game spot. Six-foot-nine defender Corbin Kaufusi was […]

Behind freshman QB Zach Wilson, BYU beats Hawaii, 49-23, at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
