Warrior Beat: Green Day

By Stephen Tsai on October 31, 2018

Here’s a Halloween treat for UH basketball supporters: Leland Green said he expects to be available to play in Friday’s exhibition against Hawaii Pacific. Green has been recovering from a shoulder ailment and ensuing corrective procedure. He did not play in the Green-White scrimmage a couple weeks ago. But Green worked out today on his own today, using a ball retriever while shooting jump shots in the Stan Sheriff Center. * * * * * * Kings for a day:

Strom-Okimoto is offensive player of the year

By Brian McInnis on October 31, 2018

Emotions were still a bit raw for the Hawaii soccer team a few days removed from its season-ending home loss to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. As pick-me-ups go, Wednesday’s Big West Conference awards announcement did quite nicely. Senior striker Raisa Strom-Okimoto became Hawaii’s first Big West offensive player of the year, and she was joined by sophomore Lei Medeiros on the All-BWC first team. Goalkeeper Lex Mata was a Big West honorable mention and center back Elena Palacios made […]

Warrior Beat: Back in the running

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2018

On a wet and ugly morning made for hot cocoa and covers pulled to the eyelids, the Warriors brought the “juice” and a blanket of enthusiasm. “The boys came out hungry,” running back Dayton Furuta said. “They were playing hard. They were playing fast. There was a lot of juice today. I like seeing the running backs finishing their runs, and Cole (McDonald) making the right reads. It was good energy today. We were trying to bounce back.” Any emotional […]

Raimo Reason: Lead through physicality

By Brian McInnis on October 30, 2018

After a recent weightlifting session, Zigmars Raimo laid out exactly how he was trying to help Hawaii’s young triad of 7-footers become Division I-ready players. Beat their okoles through sheer physicality. “I’m trying to do my best, because yeah, at first Gibson (Johnson) and Mike (Thomas) was beating my ass in the practice,” Raimo, a 6-7 junior, said of his freshman and sophomore seasons. “So I’m trying to do the same thing to Mate (Colina) and Dawson (Carper) and Owen […]

Wahine RPI at 61

By Cindy Luis on October 29, 2018

For what it’s worth — Hawaii (14-7, 10-2 Big West) is up 14 spots to 61 in Monday’s RPI. UH was swept at home by UC Santa Barbara on Saturday coming off a five-set upset of No. 11 Cal Poly at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday. Here’s the complete listing. Stanford (20-1) stays at 1, Illinois (20-3) replaces BYU (22-0) at 2, and the Cougars dropped to 3. An example of the skewed-ness of it all: USC (16-7) is at […]

UH falls on senior day

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2018

A very tough weekend for University of Hawaii sports ended the same way. After the UH football and volleyball teams had disappointing shortcomings — the Rainbow Warriors lost 50-20 at Fresno State for their third straight loss and the Rainbow Wahine were swept at home by UC Santa Barbara to put a severe damper on their postseason hopes — the UH soccer team had a chance to get one back for Manoa. Alas, it could not. With a festive crowd on hand […]

Warrior Beat: ‘Doggone it

By Stephen Tsai on October 28, 2018

Sometimes the bully wins. Fresno State showed why it is the Mountain West’s, well, um, top ‘Dog with its dominant victory over Hawaii last night. The Warriors practiced hard, prepared diligently, fought the good fight, and sometimes that’s just not good enough. Especially against the well-balanced Bulldogs. But here’s what we learned: > The road can be rough, especially for a team that does not use charter flights. Without a charter, the options are to fly to NorCal or SoCal, […]

Hawaii routed at Fresno State

By Warrior World on October 27, 2018

The Hawaii football team’s recent woes continued unabated in a 50-20 loss at Fresno State on Saturday. It was the third straight loss for the Rainbow Warriors, who dropped to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference heading into another tough matchup, at home against Utah State next weekend. UH was outplayed in all phases by its erstwhile rival FSU (7-1, 4-0). The Bulldogs, led by quarterback Marcus McMaryion, rolled up 562 yards of total offense without a […]
