‘Bows open at their collective best

By Brian McInnis on November 9, 2018

Hawaii played something more akin to hot potato than basketball for much of Friday night’s 2018-19 season opener against Portland. The Rainbow Warriors peppered the ball around the halfcourt and even a little in transition. It rarely stuck to anyone’s mitts for long, and the box score bore witness — UH assisted on 22 of its 31 field goals and had just nine turnovers in the 82-64 win on Friday night. Even without UH’s top returning scorer, Sheriff Drammeh, in action, […]

Opening Night: Hawaii vs. Portland

By Stephen Tsai on November 9, 2018

The Rainbow Warriors defeated Portland, 82-64, in tonight’s opening round of the 54th Rainbow Classic. The ‘Bows assisted on 22 of their 31 field goals, and turned the ball over only nine times — two fewer than their per-game goal. But the key was the defensive play to start the second half. The Pilots did not score on their first five possessions after the intermission, going 3 minutes, 39 seconds before their first second-half basket. After that, their next bucket […]

50th anniversary of ’68 Olympic teams, plus NLI notes

By Cindy Luis on November 9, 2018

For history buffs, USAV had a story about the reunion of the 1968 Olympic volleyball teams in Mexico City. Hawaii was well presented by players from here and some who would make their home here. On the women’s side, Bobbie Perry, Fanny Hopeau, Sharon Peterson. On the men’s team, Pete Velaso, Jon Stanley, Tom Haine, Butch May. Read the story here. Been posting these commits at various times. IMHO the Wahine will be good but young next year Here’s the […]

Wahine burned again in final seconds

By Warrior World on November 9, 2018

It was a different site but the same result for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. The Rainbow Wahine rallied from nine points down in the fourth quarter at San Diego State to take a lead on Leah Salanoa’s free throws with 1:27 left, but SDSU’s Tea Adams drove for the go-ahead basket with 7.1 seconds left and UH was off the mark on its final possession in a 58-57 afternoon loss at Viejas Arena. UH, which dropped to 0-2 for […]

Warrior Beat: Warriors return to practice

By Stephen Tsai on November 8, 2018

After a four-day break, the Warriors resumed practicing this evening. The Warriors, who have a bye this weekend, began the 90-minute workout in late afternoon and ended under the lights at the Ching Athletic Complex. The drills were light contact, although they probably will intensify for Friday’s practice. “I’m refreshed,” slotback John Ursua said. “It feels good to be able to have a bye and take my mind off a little bit and refocus what our goal is now as […]

Who will lead 2018-19 ‘Bows in scoring?

By Brian McInnis on November 8, 2018

As the 2018-19 gets underway for the Hawaii men’s basketball team on Friday night, an interesting question arises: Who will be the Rainbow Warriors’ leading scorer? Usually, you’ve got a couple of clear-cut responses to that query. Fifth-year senior Mike Thomas was the logical leader going into 2017-18 and followed through with a team-best 13.1 points per game. You had a feeling Noah Allen would emerge as the guy the year before that. But this year? You could make a […]

Warrior Beat: Hoops opener approaches; football coaches searching for prospects

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2018

The basketball ‘Bows’ season-opening opponent — Portland — is scheduled to arrive in town this afternoon. The Pilots return six of their top seven players from last year, including Marcus Shaver, a guard who has spent time in Hawaii and was a one-time UH recruit. (His father has a business here.) Hugh Hogland is a 6-10 post player from ‘Iolani School. The Rainbow Classic opens Friday, with North Texas and Humboldt State at 4:30 p.m. and UH and Portland at […]

Beeman: ‘We’ll be more than OK’ after opening loss

By Brian McInnis on November 7, 2018

Pepperdine guard Paige Fecske sprinted along the baseline, came around a curl and launched a stop-and-pop 3 that circled the rim and dropped through with 10 seconds left, a successful designed play by the trailing (now leading) Waves coming out of a timeout. Hawaii was unable to respond in kind — its play after timeout was busted and newcomer Savannah Reier had the best option remaining, a tough mid-range leaner that came up short with about five or four seconds […]
