By Stephen Tsai on February 28, 2019

Makana Garrigan, who has served on the UH football coaching staff the past three seasons, has joined Maine as a running backs coach. Garrigan is reunited with assistant head coach Pat Denecke, who is the Black Bears’ run-game coordinator and offensive line coach. Denecke, Garrigan and UH head coach Nick Rolovich were on the Nevada staff four years ago. “The weather is slightly different,” said Garrigan, noting tonight’s 12-degree temperature at the Orono campus. “Just a little different.” Garrigan was […]

She is one of 45 liberos competing for a spot on one of the U.S. national and collegiate national teams. “I’m really excited,” she told me this morning. “A goal is to play overseas. Rainbow Warrior tennis: Ilagan bursts onto scene

By Brian McInnis on February 28, 2019

Andre Ilagan is being heard. His play on the tennis court, of course, has been loud for some time now. You don’t emerge from Kalihi to become two-time state singles champion in a sound vacuum. But lately, it’s been Ilagan’s vocalization between the lines that’s represented his leap to the next level. “My dad told me never to yell because he thought it was bad. I’m pretty sure it was bad before,” Ilagan said after his most recent match for […]

Here's #HawaiiMVB coach Charlie Wade on facing UC Irvine on the road to open up @BigWestMVB […]

Swimming and diving has it all come together

By Brian McInnis on February 26, 2019

Last weekend went swimmingly for Hawaii, to say the least. The UH swimming and diving teams are coming off a program first — a sweep of the men’s and women’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team championships at La Miranda (swimming) and Mission Viejo (diving) in California. In swimming, the MPSF is comprised of schools who are otherwise in the Big West and West Coast Conferences. The Rainbow Wahine beat runner-up UC Davis 781.50 to 613.50 for their third straight MPSF title […]

Big West BVB honors to Scoles-Homayun

By Cindy Luis on February 26, 2019

Don’t think this was a huge surprise. Ari Homayun and Julia Scoles played really well over the weekend, earning Big West Pairs Team of the week on Tuesday. Opposing coaches commented on Scoles’ physicality. As they say in VB, she hits a heavy ball. Scoles’ mother was here watching. Scoles is very athletic and is falling in love with beach. She told me that she still feels like a fish out of water as she continues to learn the game. […]

Pepperdine (3-1), the Kahanamoku Classic runner-up, moved up a spot to No. 3. LSU (4-0) moved up three spots to No. 4 followed by Florida State (4-1). Among other Big West teams, Cal Poly (3-3) dropped one place to No. 7 […]
