Three former UH basketball players — Sheriff Drammeh, Brocke Stepteau and Jack Purchase — earned degrees today and are ready for the next phase of their lives. Drammeh has reached an agreement with a sports agency in Europe and is expected to play professionally over there. Purchase is headed back to his native Australia to audition for the professional league over there. The free-agent period is coming up. Stepteau is exploring options in basketball and music. He is accompanying Purchase […]

Dick Tomey was a coach, and not just of football players

By Dave Reardon on May 11, 2019

Back when I was a teen and allowed to be a fan out of sheer loyalty, or whatever other reason I wanted, Dick Tomey, who passed away last night, was my coach. He was not my coach as in playing for him, of course, but as in me rooting for his team. Same with Les Murakami and Dave Shoji. The teams they coached at the University of Hawaii when I was in high school here, and then later when I […]

Hawaii football: Former coach Dick Tomey dies at 80

By Brian McInnis on May 11, 2019

Former University of Hawaii football coach Dick Tomey died on Friday night at age 80, causing a cascade of condolences, reflection and tributes spanning social media. First up were some memories from the Warrior Beat’s Stephen Tsai. Here’s some others from Twitter: Football coach Dick Tomey, one of UH's most beloved coaches, died in Arizona Friday night, the family announced. He had been battling lung cancer. Tomey had a 63-46-3 record at UH from 1977-'86 where he revitalized the football […]

Hawaii softball: 7 seniors get a surprise in final game

By Brian McInnis on May 11, 2019

Bob Coolen figured the time for some lineup trickery was at hand. In his 28 years as Hawaii softball coach, only a handful of times has he had as large a senior class as the seven of 2019. And in those past instances, there’d typically be some kind of conference positioning or overall win-loss consideration that superseded a luxury such as starting every member of a large crop of seniors on senior night. Not this year. This time, UH knew […]

Here’s the skinny: > Blocker is 6-3, 230 pounds. He played D-end in Lawndale’s 4-3 and outside linebacker in the 3-4. He’s expected to compete at hybrid end for the Warriors. > He attended Downey High in L.A. through his junior […]

Hawaii water polo: Misfortune strikes UH; Cal downs Rainbow Wahine in NCAA quarterfinals

By Brian McInnis on May 10, 2019

UPDATE: Hawaii got off to a strong start and led California by two goals, and UH was tied with the Golden Bears at halftime, but the Pac-12 school dominated the second half to swim away with a 17-13 quarterfinal win over UH at Stanford on Friday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Golden Bears, who improved to 3-1 against Hawaii this season — 3-0 on the mainland — rattled off five straight goals spanning the third and fourth quarters once UH got within […]

Hawaii softball: UH splits doubleheader with Davis, NCAA berth out of reach

By Brian McInnis on May 10, 2019

It was going to take a lot for the Hawaii softball team to pick up an NCAA tournament berth at the conclusion of this week. For starters, the Rainbow Wahine needed to sweep Thursday’s doubleheader against UC Davis to keep hope of an outright Big West regular-season title alive into Friday’s senior night. Sweeping Davis in three games and having Cal State Fullerton lose out at UC Riverside in three games Friday and Saturday was the only combination that would […]

Warrior Beat: Hawaii athletics all about the keiki on Thursday

By Stephen Tsai on May 9, 2019

In a state surrounded by water, it’s always refreshing to see UH’s coaches wade into the community to volunteer their time for a worthy cause. Once again, the Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine helped sell Keiki Day newspapers to raise funds for Parents and Children Together (PACT).
