Hawaii tennis, water polo players receive All-America honors

The Hawaii women’s tennis and water polo programs received some heady individual recognition over the last few days. Water polo players Irene Gonzalez and Elyse Lemay-Lavoie were named All-Americans, as was UH tennis star Petra Melounova. Gonzalez, a first-teamer, and Lemay-Lavoie, a second-teamer, helped the Rainbow Wahine to the Big West championship and the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015. Hawaii men’s basketball: Phil Handy represents with Raptors

When it comes to NBA teams and making deep runs into the postseason, it helps to have a Phil Handy handy. Hawaii Football: Pac-12 Networks to air Washington game

As expected, the Pac-12 Networks will televise the Sept. 14 UH-Washington game in Seattle. The seven-year-old network has 17.9 million viewers. The kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. HT. Hawaii finishes seventh in 2019 Big West Commissioner’s Cup

As Ferd Lewis reported in Wednesday’s newspaper, Hawaii finished seventh of nine schools in the Big West Commissioner’s Cup standings for 2018-19. That actually represented a step up; UH was eighth in 2017-18. UH’s 15 sports that compete in the Big West finished with a scoring average of 91.3. Hawaii baseball: Yamazaki named to Big West first team; Scott wins frosh award

Shortstop Maaki Yamazaki today was named to the All-Big West first team as a utility player. Yamazaki hit .308 while striking out a team-fewest 7.6 percent of his at bats. After suffering a shoulder injury on April 24, he was used at second base and designated hitter. The 2019 baseball season was going adequately for Hawaii, until it wasn’t. And “wasn’t” happened in a hurry but will linger through the entire offseason.
