Wahine achieve straight-days sweep

By Brian McInnis on September 23, 2018

One-hundred and eighty minutes of soccer in a 26-hour span is no joke. That was the requirement for Hawaii this weekend, and the Rainbow Wahine answered the challenge emphatically with a 4-0 win over Grand Canyon on Sunday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. By defeating North Dakota State and GCU on consecutive days, UH (5-3-1) won the three-team Rainbow Wahine Shootout heading into Big West play with a combined 6-0 score. The ‘Lopes (3-9) pressured the Wahine defensive third early […]

Football Throwbacks: FCS teams

By Brian McInnis on September 22, 2018

Hawaii and today’s opponent, Duquesne of the Football Championship Subdivision, have never encountered each other on a football field, so that makes going through the series history and picking a game to highlight a little challenging. What we can look at in this week’s “Football Throwbacks” edition is Hawaii against the crop of FCS teams it has faced. Hawaii has won its last 15 games against FCS opponents going back to 2001; in 2000, it lost to Portland State 45-20. […]

Homecoming Q&A: David Matlin

By Brian McInnis on September 21, 2018

Dull moments are few for fourth-year Hawaii athletic director David Matlin. Leading UH’s 21-sport department presents constant, fresh challenges in a rapidly changing collegiate landscape. Matlin, the former executive director of the Hawaii Bowl and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, sat down with Hawaii Warrior World for a wide-ranging Q&A session in advance of the Hawaii football team’s homecoming game against Duquesne. Topics included progress of facilities projects, the state of the UH football and volleyball teams, his leadership […]

Q&A: Meskell perfect so far

By Brian McInnis on September 20, 2018

The Hawaii football team is no longer perfect this season, but the Rainbow Warriors’ placekicker still is. Through four games, redshirt junior Ryan Meskell has converted every field goal (4-for-4) and extra-point attempt (20-for-20) he’s taken. UH has already matched its made field-goal total from last season (4-for-9). “Mesk” is a former soccer goalkeeper at Lewis & Clark (Ill.) Community College who didn’t play college football until last season. After going 1-for-4 in his shared role on field goals last […]

(Semi) Uncharted territory

By Brian McInnis on September 18, 2018

In the illustrious history of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball program, something never happened until this week. UPDATE: (Well, almost.) Notably, UH had never entered conference play with a losing record. That changed with last week’s five-set loss to then-No. 12 Oregon, the second defeat to the Ducks in as many nights. It knocked UH down to 4-5 going into Big West play; the Wahine are at UC Davis on Friday and UC Irvine on Sunday. CORRECTION: This is actually the […]

Football Throwbacks: Army

By Brian McInnis on September 15, 2018

As Hawaii prepares to face Army today at Michie Stadium, it’s a good time to take a look back at the Rainbow Warriors’ only trip to West Point to date. That Sept. 11, 2010, meeting sure left some lasting memories. In this week’s “Football Throwbacks,” UH’s 31-28 road win is remembered as one of UH’s most remarkable under coach Greg McMackin during a his most successful (10-4, 7-1 WAC) season. And it was by far the most closely contested of […]

Wahine look to extend road success

By Brian McInnis on September 12, 2018

Leialoha Medeiros, a Maui native, wasn’t too worried about Tropical Storm Olivia earlier this week. The Hawaii soccer team had plenty of its own concerns heading into its last nonconference road trip of the season. The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a home loss to Division II powerhouse UC San Diego (but a Division II team nonetheless). “Living in Hawaii my whole life, hurricanes … tsunamis, it’s always been a normal thing for us,” said Medeiros, whose family lives in […]

UH hoops walk-on LaCount done playing

By Brian McInnis on September 11, 2018

Some college hoops players toil away behind the scenes and never get much in the way of public recognition. Such is the life of a scout-team player. Occasionally, some guys never get the public spotlight at all. Alas, such is the case with Hawaii basketball walk-on Trevor LaCount, who follows in the tradition of Caleb Dressler, Orel Lev, Aleksandar Milovic and Gary Satterwhite Jr., to name a few players of recent vintage who practiced and scouted opponents for at least […]
