Spearman keeping at it

By Brian McInnis on February 26, 2013

Many people may have written off a return this season by Hawaii junior guard Brandon Spearman, who went down with a severe ankle injury at Pacific a little more than a week ago. Brandon Spearman is still not one of those people. Spearman’s been attacking his rehab hard with team trainer Lyn Nakagawa, and hasn’t backed off from his hope to return to action in the Big West tournament March 14-16. “Like I said, feeling like I’m going to be […]

End of the Rainbow

By Brian McInnis on February 13, 2013

Well, it’s happened. The University of Hawaii and athletic director Ben Jay announced an official shift in nickname for it’s men’s sports teams from “Rainbows,” “Rainbow Warriors” and “Warriors” from sport to sport to just “Warriors” for all its men’s teams, effective July 1. UH women’s teams will remain known as “Rainbow Wahine.” You can read the Star-Advertiser’s breaking news story on it written by Billy Hull here. There’s also the scoop Dave Reardon had about the impending move in […]

UH hoops updates // Tragedy at CSUF

By Brian McInnis on February 4, 2013

Coming off its three-game road winning streak, the Hawaii men’s basketball team was greeted with a pair of news items on Monday. First off, junior forward Christian Standhardinger was named Big West Player of the Week for averaging 20.5 points and nine rebounds in the 72-68 win at UC Riverside and the 77-75 win at Cal State Fullerton. You could even throw in his 31 and 16 at UC Santa Barbara for likely getting the decision makers’ attention going into […]

Four for the road

By Brian McInnis on January 22, 2013

Saying the season of the Hawaii men’s basketball team hinges on the next four games, all on the road, would be a little melodramatic. Remember, the Big West is a one-bid league to the NCAA Tournament and whichever team puts it all together in mid-March will be the one to go dancing. But when it comes to some of the alternate tournaments — as well as long-term coaching and program perception consequences — picking up wins right now absolutely makes […]

Return home = return to form?

By Brian McInnis on January 14, 2013

Hey all, there won’t be a UH hoops story in Tuesday’s edition of the newspaper. Thus, I figured it’s a good time to use the blog format to help answer some of the burning questions some of you have had based on the road losses at UC Irvine and Long Beach State last week. UH (9-7, 3-2) plays at home vs Pacific (9-7, 3-1) on Thursday and UC Davis (5-10, 1-3) on Saturday. A 2-0 week would vault the fourth-place […]

Revenge of the blog

By Brian McInnis on January 13, 2013

Malware? Hah! You can’t keep Court Sense down with malware, anonymous internet fiends. In any case, we’re back up and running. Apologies to anyone who tried to visit and got a strange message warning you about malware on the site over the last week or so. It appears to have been resolved. Since the last posting, the Hawaii men’s basketball team was dealt a dose of road heartbreak. Close losses at UC Irvine (68-64) and two-time defending champion Long Beach […]

New Year's resolutions

By Brian McInnis on January 1, 2013

Happy New Years to all. Raise your glass and let us take a moment to reflect on the 2012 hoops year that was. It was an up-and-down one from a UH perspective. The second half of the 2011-12 season saw the ‘Bows go from a WAC contender to a fizzle of a regular-season finish with losses in six of their last seven. That one win, however, came over Idaho in the WAC tournament first round, adding at least a moment […]

Jewel of a Diamond Head Classic

By Brian McInnis on December 27, 2012

Pete Derzis at ESPN Regional TV and David Matlin, the executive director of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, should be given a round of applause for the fine 2012 edition of  the just-completed tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center. The championship game of the 2012 DHC should help keep this tournament on the map in the years to come. No. 3 Arizona needed a huge block from freakishly athletic Nick Johnson on Chase Tapley’s layup attempt at the buzzer […]
