Jankovic mulls options

By Brian McInnis on December 20, 2013

If Stefan Jankovic is to be a Hawaii Rainbow Warrior, it will happen in the next handful of days. Jankovic, the ex-Missouri Tiger forward, said on Friday after returning from his visit to UH that he plans to decide by the end of December (note: corrected from the end of January) so he can get a jump on enrolling at his next Division I destination. He has a list of “1o or 15” other schools he’s considering, he said. UPDATED: […]

Another ex-Missouri visitor

By Brian McInnis on December 17, 2013

The Hawaii basketball team is looking to add to its stockpile of ex-Missouri players. Former Tiger forward Stefan Jankovic (not to be confused with current Rainbow Warrior Stefan Jovanovic) is inbound to make an official visit to the Manoa campus. Should he commit, he’ll follow in the footsteps of Negus Webster-Chan, who is redshirting at UH as a Division I transfer from MU. Like Webster-Chan, Jankovic is from Ontario, Canada. Like Jovanovic, Jankovic was born in Serbia. He has two years of […]

Gameday (Kauai edition): Chaminade

By Brian McInnis on December 14, 2013

By default, you have to be on upset alert anytime the Chaminade Silverswords take the floor against a Division I opponent. The fact that today’s Hawaii-Chaminade game takes place on Kauai — in what is believed to be the first NCAA basketball game on the island — adds another wrinkle to the proceedings. Reminder: There is no TV or streaming video for this one. It will be on 1420-AM and there will be live stats at goswords.com. This matchup between […]

Jamie Smith to return

By Brian McInnis on December 12, 2013

Amazingly, the Jamie Smith Saga in Hawaii is not over yet. (That would be the former Hawaii basketball video coordinator, not the former ‘Iolani girls and UNLV women’s hoops standout.) Smith, who’s been back in his native Britain since last season ended, plans to rejoin the Rainbow Warriors as video coordinator in the coming weeks. As many of you will recall, Smith helped galvanize the UH student section last year even after he was unable to maintain his role as […]

Gameday: Northern Arizona

By Brian McInnis on December 7, 2013

There’s snow on the ground at 7,000 feet in Flagstaff, Ariz. Hawaii will have to overcome the elements in addition to the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona today. Tipoff is in about 1 hour at 2 p.m. Hawaii time. You can see the game on Oceanic Ch. 246 (that’s a premium channel) or streaming online for free at nau-tv.com or watchbigsky.com. UH goes for the ‘Jackfecta today, with its women’s basketball (74-66) and soccer (1-0) teams having won in Flagstaff already […]

Fotu rests up

By Brian McInnis on December 3, 2013

Hawaii may have played Isaac Fotu with a fractured bone in his hand against Montana last week, but that doesn’t mean the Rainbow Warriors are taking any chances on their stud forward in the grind of everyday practices. Fotu has remained out of team sessions since injuring the hand in the blowout New Orleans game, including the first two practices this week, Monday and Tuesday. UH leaves for Flagstaff, Ariz., on Thursday to settle in before Saturday’s BracketBusters return game […]

Gameday: Montana

By Brian McInnis on November 29, 2013

The Rainbow Warrior basketball team goes for its third straight victory tonight against the Montana Grizzlies. It will be decidedly tougher than their last two wins, blowouts of Division II Hawaii Hilo and one of the worst D-I teams in the country in New Orleans. UM (1-3) lost some key personnel from last year but has a champion’s pedigree; it represented the Big Sky Conference in the NCAA Tournament three of the last four years. Watch out for Grizzlies senior […]

Gameday: New Orleans

By Brian McInnis on November 27, 2013

Hawaii will look to make it a second straight win tonight at 7 p.m. against New Orleans of the Southland Conference at the Stan Sheriff Center. Our Jason Kaneshiro was on hand for Tuesday’s practice, the last full session before the game. Here were some of Jason’s observations: ————— Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold issued a couple of challenges during Tuesday’s practice at the Stan Sheriff Center. Both were answered as the Rainbow Warriors continued preparations for Wednesday’s game against […]
