Good get for 'Bows

By Brian McInnis on May 21, 2014

The Hawaii men’s basketball team may have been quiet for most of the spring signing period, but the Rainbow Warriors made some noise on the final day of the period Wednesday by signing post banger Sammis Reyes of North Broward (Fla.) Prep. The 6-7, 240-pound Reyes should be of immediate help for a UH team that lost two of three players from its frontcourt rotation in the 2013-14 season. He averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and four assists per game for […]

UH whiffs on another

By Brian McInnis on May 20, 2014

Heading into the final day of the spring signing period Wednesday, there was some hope Hawaii could pick up a much-needed big man in the form of Navarro (Texas) College 6-foot-10, 290-pound center Jaleel Cousins. Nope. Cousins, who I’m told visited UH recently with his older brother DeMarcus of the NBA, elected to sign with South Florida on Tuesday. That’s two known recruits in a row UH could not close the deal on, after point guard target Joey Frenchwood recently […]

Fisher exploring options

By Brian McInnis on May 13, 2014

Hawaii assistant coach Scott Fisher could very well be plying his trade elsewhere next season, independent of the NCAA’s findings of the UH men’s hoops program. “I’m employed by UH but yes I am investigating other options,” Fisher wrote in a message to the Star-Advertiser on Tuesday. Fisher’s Australian connections remain strong. He’s regarded as a true Hall of Famer there based on his playing and coaching experience after his days at UC Santa Barbara. He’s been with Gib Arnold […]

2 new recruiting names

By Brian McInnis on April 29, 2014

The Twitterverse revealed two new recruiting prospects for the Hawaii men’s basketball team over the last 24 hours. The first is Newark Memorial High (Bay Area, Calif.) senior point guard Joey Frenchwood. The 6-foot-1 Frenchwood picked up his first Division I offer on Sunday from Hawaii, he said in a phone interview Tuesday. He said he plans to take a visit to the islands before deciding — but UH’s odds seem good here, as his other interest is from Montana […]

Arnold Call the Coach roundup

By Brian McInnis on April 22, 2014

Hawaii coach Gib Arnold made a rare after-season appearance on KKEA 1420-AM’s Call the Coach Show on Tuesday amid several offseason happenings for his program. Highlights include Arnold saying he has two scholarships remaining for next season; stating that a game against Pittsburgh on Maui before the EA Sports Maui Invitational was likely; and saying his contract situation still has not been resolved. Here’s a sampling of Arnold quotes on some of the topics discussed, with questions asked mostly by […]

Musings on Shamburger

By Brian McInnis on April 15, 2014

Well, if you haven’t heard by now, Hawaii point guard Keith Shamburger is picking up his ball and going home. If you drew up a list of likely candidates to leave early right after the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, Shamburger wouldn’t have been near the top; his starting job seemed relatively secure. But now UH heads into the fall requiring a new starting ballhandler for the fourth straight year. Less than two weeks ago, Shamburger was hyping up some […]

General recruiting update

By Brian McInnis on April 9, 2014

MONDAY UPDATE: Indian Hills Community College guard Roderick Bobbitt has verbally committed to UH. With Wednesday’s news that Abel Porter is still uncommitted leading up to his two-year LDS mission, let’s talk about a couple guys who could be part of Hawaii’s immediate future. I’ve been told that UH just hosted Navarro (Texas) College 6-foot-10 sophomore center Jaleel Cousins for an official visit early this week. Cousins, the younger brother of the Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins, averaged 7.1 points and 4.8 […]

Big names on 2014-15 schedule?

By Brian McInnis on April 2, 2014

There was a little buzz Wednesday about some possible big names on Hawaii’s 2014-15 schedule. Players Keith Shamburger and Aaron Valdes tweeted about Kentucky (a current Final Four team) and Pittsburgh (coached by former UH assistant Jamie Dixon) coming to the Stan Sheriff Center in nonconference play.   got Pitt and Kentucky coming to the crib next year. — Keith Shamburger (@MagicShammm) April 2, 2014   Kentucky and PITT next year coming to the SSC? #LetsGo — AIR CUBA (@Gumby_32) […]
