Hawaii football: Single-digit jersey numbers must be earned

By Christian Shimabuku on August 3, 2019

After earning a scholarship last fall, Hawaii slotback Jason-Matthew Sharsh wasn’t done striving for something else he wanted — a coveted single-digit jersey number for the Rainbow Warriors. Sharsh finally got it heading into his last fall camp, making the switch from 89 to 3 in time for his senior season. “It started at JUCO,” Sharsh said of his affinity for the number. “JUCO, I wore 3 my second year because of Odell Beckham. I became a Giants fan. Odell, […]

Hawaii football practices at Aloha Stadium

By Stephen Tsai on August 3, 2019

What happens when a Ford and a Froooot truck collide? The result is a thumping takedown and rousing cheers from the defensive sideline after 200-pound nickelback Eugene Ford‘s open-field tackle of 250-pound running back Dayton Furuta. That was among many highlights of the Rainbow Warriors’ controlled scrimmage at Aloha Stadium. Hawaii football: Chevan Cordeiro right at home at Saint Louis

By Brian McInnis on August 2, 2019

You could feel it immediately upon stepping foot out of the parking structure at the Saint Louis and Chaminade University campus and onto the track bordering the artificial turf football field. The stiff breeze. “It’s always (like that),” said Hawaii redshirt freshman quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, the 2017 state champion quarterback for the Crusaders. “(Thursday) when they said we were practicing at Saint Louis, everyone who practiced here before, played at Saint Louis knew it was going to be windy. It […]

By Christian Shimabuku on August 2, 2019

Fresh off signing a record four-year, $140 million contract extension, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson hosted a mini-training camp for a handful of teammates at his house in San Diego. Among those who headed to Wilson’s residence for the excursion was former Hawaii wide receiver John Ursua, who was taken in the seventh round by the Seahawks in April. Wilson documented the experience on his official YouTube channel, where Ursua made a couple of memorable appearances. In the first episode, […]

Hawaii football team practices at Saint Louis School

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2019

“I just woke up like this,” said pass-game coordinator Craig Stutzmann, who was dressed in his high school alma mater’s apparel. “I don’t know what happened. I had a Saint Louis shirt and a Saint Louis hat right out of bed.” It was a fitting attire for Stutzmann, whose football worlds met when the Rainbow Warriors practiced on the Saint Louis campus today. The Rainbow Warriors had to move practice sites in anticipation of inclement weather. The Warriors’ only available […]

Hawaii football: Offensive line shuffles at Practice No. 6

By Stephen Tsai on August 1, 2019

A day after delivering the hits in a fully padded workout, the Warriors were back in “shells” — shoulder pads and shorts — for Thursday’s sixth practice of training camp. The focus was in the middle, where true sophomore Solo Vaipulu was the center with the No. 1 offense. Vaipulu, who started all 14 games at right guard in 2018, is filling in for Kohl Levao, who is expected to miss most of the remaining days of training camp with […]

Hawaii football: The Byrd is still the word

By Brian McInnis on August 1, 2019

At the end of Thursday morning’s practice, the Hawaii football team broke into position groups and began sprinting downfield one at a time — even the linemen — to haul in passes. Because of the entertainment and curiosity factors, there was almost no reason to watch the full-time UH receivers do their regular thing. Almost. In the final minutes, senior slotback Cedric Byrd II, seemingly without effort, hauled in a ball one-handed on the run, tightroping a sideline. “We had to […]
