Hawaii got more late-game magic from backup quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, and the Warriors held off a late Arizona rally to win their season-opener as 11-point underdogs. >> HAWAII VS. Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Arizona

By Brian McInnis on August 24, 2019

When Hawaii and Arizona meet to open the 2019 season today, they will honor the late Dick Tomey, a mutual former head coach of the programs. In this season-opening edition of Hawaii Football Throwbacks, we’re fittingly heading back to 1977, Tomey’s first season coaching the Rainbow Warriors. UH closed that Division I Independent season facing UA at the still-brand-new Aloha Stadium on Dec. 3. The Rainbows were surprisingly in contention for a winning season, having put together consecutive wins over […]

Hawaii football: Paul Scott rises to linebacker rotation

By Brian McInnis on August 23, 2019

It’s Paul Scott’s time to shine. Scott, of Oakland, Calif., was UH’s Special Teams MVP last season. That was where the reserve linebacker saw most of his playing time while recording 17 total tackles and forcing two fumbles. But the redshirt sophomore’s role has been elevated considerably heading into the 2019 season opener Saturday against Arizona at Aloha Stadium. Scott (6 feet 1, 210 pounds) will be in the primary rotation of linebackers, along with Solomon Matautia, Jeremiah Pritchard, Penei […]

Hawaii athletics: Compliance officer Richard Greene heading to Auburn

By Stephen Tsai on August 23, 2019

Sometimes, it seems Richard Greene is everywhere. He’s at UH football practices at 7 in the morning and basketball practices at 3. He’s at the Nagatani Center all day. At Les Murakami Stadium, that scoreboard often is being run by … well, Rich. And then when it’s 9:50 on a Thursday morning, and there’s Rich at Ala Moana Center’s Satellite City Hall, you realize, he is everywhere. Especially since an hour-long coffee hour in his honor started at 9 a.m. […]

Hawaii football openers: Best of times and worst of times

By Dave Reardon on August 23, 2019

The memories are foggy 31 years later. Was it one or two seconds left in the game when that freshman from Georgia kicked the 70-yard field goal to give 56-point underdog Hawaii the win over No. 1-ranked Iowa, driving 50,000 fans at Aloha Stadium to delirium? Yes, really foggy. And there are some of you out there who don’t have to look it up to remember that Iowa was not No. 1 in the 1988 preseason: it was 9th in […]

Hawaii football: Wyatt Tucker readies for long snapper debut

By Brian McInnis on August 22, 2019

Wyatt Tucker occasionally misses playing in the trenches. Then he remembers what got him here. “All my best friends played O-line (at Chino Hills High). Everyone on there was my group of friends,” said Tucker, Hawaii’s successor to four-year veteran Noah Borden at long snapper. “But I was the smallest out of all of them by four inches. … I played center so I was right in the middle. We came in like a “V.” I knew I was going […]
