Governor’s Ball: Hawaii football team practices at Farrington High

By Stephen Tsai on August 29, 2019

There were two explanations as to why the Hawaii football team practiced at Farrington High’s Edward “Skippa” Diaz Stadium this morning: 1. The Warriors wanted to rest their grass practice field, which has been chewed up with rain and heavy use. 2. “We needed to find out where that mana came from on that last play,” head coach Nick Rolovich said, a reference to defensive lineman Pumba Williams‘ 35-yard sprint to help tackle Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate a yard short […]

Oregon State transfer Tufaga practices with Hawaii football team

By Stephen Tsai on August 28, 2019

On a bye week, the Warriors welcomed Isaiah Tufaga, a former All-State football player from Saint Louis School. A week ago, Tufaga announced on Twitter he was transferring from Oregon State. Yesterday, Tufaga went through the drills with a helmet. Today, Tufaga was in shoulder pads. He is likely to redshirt this year in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. >> UH FOOTBALL PRACTICE PHOTO GALLERY AUG. 28 “It was good to put the pads back on and get a feel […]

Hawaii football: Despite attendance lag, Rolovich knows program getting seen

By Brian McInnis on August 27, 2019

It’s more than just the number of butts in the seats, or lack thereof. Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich is thinking expansively on the topic of attendance these days. There were only 20,572 counted through the Aloha Stadium turnstiles for Saturday’s season-opening, nationally televised win over Arizona. Even considering the downward overall trend of attendance for UH football games for years now, the talk of turnout leading up to the game — a marquee matchup against a Pac-12 opponent — was mentioned […]

Hawaii football’s Pumba Williams made a name for himself

By Stephen Tsai on August 27, 2019

Even before he was born, Manly Williams would be known as “Pumba,” a nickname his older brother chose from “The Lion King.” Growing up, Williams said, “the only people who called me Manly were my mom, my grandpa and my teachers.” After making a tandem tackle to seal the Warriors’ 45-38 victory over Arizona this past weekend, Williams is a household name. Several teams — including Clemson, Georgia, the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills — used the video clip […]

Hawaii football: Quarterbacks coach Stutzmann sees bonus, not controversy

By Dave Reardon on August 26, 2019

Some like to call football the ultimate team game. And the team effort in Hawaii’s 45-38 victory over Arizona on Saturday was evident in many forms. The Warriors made plenty of mistakes, but they bounced back from them enough to beat a team that was favored by 11 points. Teammates picked up each other. Units picked up each other. Guys picked themselves up, like Pumba Williams, the defensive lineman who on the final play kept hustling to make a game-saving […]

Warrior Beat: Egg-cellent outcome for Hawaii football

By Stephen Tsai on August 26, 2019

To the victors go … the omelets. In what has become a protein-filled tradition, the Monday after each football victory, the Warriors are treated to an omelet of their choice at the training-table breakfast. (All student-athletes eligible for training table also are allowed to partake in the omelets.) That was the case this morning when omelets were served in addition to the usual buffet of scrambled eggs, various meats and poultry, fruits, vegetables, and so forth. Following Saturday’s victory over […]

Hawaii football: Week Zero hero Cedric Byrd lands in record book, UH gets max exposure

By Dave Reardon on August 25, 2019

It is said people best remember the first and the last things they see. That makes Cedric Byrd’s sublime performance in Hawaii’s 45-38 victory over Arizona all the better for him and the Rainbow Warriors. This was one of just two FBS Division I games played a week before the 150th season of college football really gets into gear. That means Byrd’s 14 catches for 224 yards and four TDs stands out all the more. The 4:30 p.m. Hawaii kickoff […]

Warrior Beat: Manly effort sealed Hawaii football’s victory

By Stephen Tsai on August 25, 2019

It was 33 years ago when Corey Batoon and Manly Williams were Saint Louis School teammates. Batoon was a quick and tough defensive back. Williams was a dynamic linebacker who was equally remembered for mowing down opponents on special teams. Batoon, now UH’s defensive coordinator, said his former teammate’s nephew — also named Manly Williams, but answers to Pumba — has the same appreciation for the sport. >> HAWAII VS.
