Hawaii football: Linebacker Kana‘i Picanco reaping what he’s sown

By Brian McInnis on September 20, 2019

Kana‘i Picanco had dirt bikes to ride, cattle to raise, and corn, squash and flower crops to harvest. Football? He had more important thing to do in rural Kahaluu. “My dad them were farmers and stuff, you know, when they were young. That’s how they grew up. They grew up that way, we grew up that way too,” said Picanco, the youngest of six siblings. “It wasn’t like my first choice to play football when I was younger, because I […]

Warrior Beat: Cole McDonald named Hawaii football captain; Farris invited to Hula Bowl

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2019

Quarterback Cole McDonald has been added as a team captain, head coach Nick Rolovich confirmed today. McDonald joins running back Dayton Furuta, slotback Jason-Matthew Sharsh, defensive lineman Azia Se‘ei and rush end Kaimana Padello. Last week, Furuta underwent ankle surgery and will miss an extended amount of playing time. During a team meeting the night before the Sept. 14 Washington game, Furuta called and requested that McDonald serve as his replacement as captain. McDonald joined the other captains during the […]

Warrior Beat: Donovan Dalton made safety a priority for Hawaii football

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2019

An understudy is expected to be ready when his number is called. At 4:40 p.m. Pacific Time this past Saturday, in Donovan Dalton’s 40th game as a Rainbow Warrior, the coaches yelled for No. 29. Dalton replaced safety Khoury Bethley, who was ejected. Bethley had started in place of ailing Ikem Okeke. Dalton made eight tackles — exceeding last season’s total of six — in the 53-20 loss to Washington. “That was the first time getting 50-plus snaps (in a […]

Remembering former Hawaii football, basketball standout Dr. Richard Mamiya

By Ferd Lewis on September 18, 2019

Decades before Tim Chang, John Hao and Chevan Cordeiro ever took aim at an end zone for the University of Hawaii, there was another quarterback from Saint Louis School who starred for the Rainbows. Athletics was but one remarkable facet of the widely successful life of Dr. Richard Mamiya, who died last month at age 94. Mamiya is internationally known as a pioneering heart surgeon and humanitarian. Locally, he was honored as a philanthropist as well as one of the […]

Hawaii football: No ‘pointing fingers’ after Washington loss

By Brian McInnis on September 17, 2019

The Hawaii football team handled early-season success fairly well. How will the Rainbow Warriors handle a lopsided defeat? So far, pretty well, coach Nick Rolovich and players said on Tuesday, a few days removed from the 52-20 loss at Washington that knocked UH (2-1) from the ranks of college football’s unbeatens. “Great,” Rolovich said of his players’ response. “I don’t think they liked losing. I hate losing. They, the best thing is they didn’t start pointing fingers or blaming people. […]

By Brian McInnis on September 16, 2019

Hawaii’s three primary fall sports teams are on the move this week. UH football returns home following its lopsided defeat at then-No. 23 Washington, which knocked the Rainbow Warriors from the ranks of the college football unbeatens. Fresh off its sweep of rival UCLA and a shiny new No. 13 ranking, the unbeaten Rainbow Wahine volleyball team heads to Waco, Texas, for the Baylor Invitational and their toughest test of the season. And the UH soccer team is heading back […]

Hawaii football takes first loss at Washington

By Brian McInnis on September 14, 2019

Washington flung Hawaii down from atop the Pac-12 standings. The Rainbow Warriors, who enjoyed success against the Power Five league in its first two games against Arizona and Oregon State, found no such fortune in Seattle on Saturday. The No. 23 Huskies proved too fast and potent on both sides of the ball in UH’s 52-20 loss at Husky Stadium. Fifty-two was the most points allowed by UH since a 56-23 loss at UCLA on Sept. 9, 2017, and tied […]

Hawaii football: Wisconsin dropped from future schedules, more moves to come

By Ferd Lewis on September 14, 2019

SEATTLE >> Cancellation of two upcoming football games with Wisconsin is apparently a precursor to more scheduling moves, University of Hawaii officials said. UH and Wisconsin said they “mutually” agreed to cancel a 2022 game at Madison, Wis. and a 2024 game at Aloha Stadium, confirming a report by FBSchedules.com. The games were part of an initial three-game series. The opener was played in 2015 at Wisconsin where the Badgers won 28-0. “There are more chips to fall,” athletic director […]
