Hawaii men’s basketball: Rainbow Warriors seek streak-buster

By Brian McInnis on February 20, 2020

Will it be tonight? That’s what the Hawaii men’s basketball team has to be asking itself heading into Thursday night’s nationally televised battle with similarly skidding UC Riverside at SRC Arena. Or — perhaps the Rainbow Warriors are telling themselves something to the effect of “it will be tonight.” UPDATE: UH got its streak-buster in dramatic fashion, beating UC Riverside 56-55 after squandering a 17-point second-half lead. The Rainbows’ four-game losing streak has hung over them like a storm cloud […]

Hawaii football: Todd Graham sets titles for complete staff

By Brian McInnis on February 19, 2020

As Todd Graham announced additions to his inaugural Hawaii football staff one by one over the last few weeks, he frequently announced the newcomers as “offensive assistant” or “defensive assistant” without a specific title. That was with the exception of his three coordinator hires; Victor Santa Cruz (defense), G.J. Kinne (offense), and Dan Phillips (special teams) were announced as such at the time of their hiring. With Tuesday’s addition Tony Hull as the last of 10 full-time staff hires, Graham […]

Rainbow Forecast: Washington State to test Hawaii baseball; women’s basketball has first-place showdown; SandBows begin

By Brian McInnis on February 17, 2020

With the exception of the top-ranked Hawaii men’s volleyball team, just about every other spring sport is in action this week. That includes beach volleyball, which opens its 2020 season in the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen’s Beach. The SandBows begin at No. 5. Scout the smorgasbord below and pick your spots, because there’s an absolute ton going on — though much of it takes place on the mainland for sports like water polo, swimming and women’s tennis. The […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Bob Nash puts long journey into perspective on jersey retirement night

By Brian McInnis on February 16, 2020

There was an arena full of people to thank. Bob Nash did his best to get to everyone. “I’ve been blessed. My family’s been blessed. And I really appreciate you,” he told the nearly 6,000 in house as he became the first Hawaii men’s basketball player to have his jersey officially retired at halftime of Saturday night’s contest against UC Irvine. “My wife (Domelynne), sadly she’s not here to see this moment, but I know she’s smiling down on us. […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Rainbow Wahine alumna Michelle Gabriel in spotlight of Maryknoll School decision

By Brian McInnis on February 13, 2020

Former Hawaii women’s basketball player Michelle Gabriel is in the news for a recent decision by Maryknoll School, her alma mater and now-former employer. Maryknoll decided to release Gabriel, a 1999 Spartans graduate who went on to play for UH’s Vince Goo (1999-2003), from her position as director of its middle school in late January because she was eight months pregnant and unmarried. A rally of support for Gabriel, who was also a P.E. teacher, was held Wednesday outside of […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Rainbow Warriors soul search after brutal loss to Long Beach State

By Brian McInnis on February 13, 2020

Members of the Hawaii men’s basketball team attempted to give voice to what transpired on the Stan Sheriff Center court some 20 minutes earlier. No easy feat after the 50-49 loss to last-place Long Beach State. “We gotta find ourselves, a little bit. We lost our way just a little,” said senior Eddie Stansberry. “Just lack of togetherness. The whole game we just wasn’t together,” freshman guard Justin Webster summarized. Maybe most telling, a shaken Eran Ganot said, “We weren’t […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Julissa Tago, Amy Atwell within range of season 3-point record

By Brian McInnis on February 12, 2020

The recent 3-point binge of the Hawaii women’s basketball team has led to what could be the most prolific outside-shooting season in program history. Not one, but two Hawaii women’s basketball players could — and will very likely — soon surpass the program record for 3-pointers in a season, with Julissa Tago positioned to possibly do it as soon as Thursday’s home game against Cal State Northridge. Tago, the senior guard who is at No. 4 in Rainbow Wahine career 3s […]

Rainbow Forecast: Marquee matchups at home for Hawaii basketball, on road for men’s volleyball

By Brian McInnis on February 10, 2020

All five of Hawaii’s primary spring spectator sports are in action this week, plus some others. The No. 1 UH men’s volleyball team (12) and Rainbow Wahine basketball team (five) put some significant win streaks on the line. The volleyballers head to the Bay Area to face No. 11 Stanford in a two-match set, while the Wahine host always-competitive Cal State Northridge. UH men’s basketball has two marquee home matchups in Long Beach State on Wednesday and league leader UC […]
