Hawaii women’s volleyball: Okino, Wahine outlast Ruddins, UCSB

By Brian McInnis on November 2, 2019

For a few moments, it appeared that UC Santa Barbara hitter Lindsey Ruddins was going to single-handedly carry the Gauchos to a crucial road win at Hawaii. Fortunately for UH, and most unfortunately for UCSB, Friday night’s match at the Stan Sheriff Center lasted much longer than a few moments. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. UC SANTA BARBARA The Gauchos’ senior hitter had season highs in both kills (27) and swings (80) in hitting .275, but she wore down in […]

Hawaii soccer: Irvine loss clinches Big West tournament berth for Wahine

By Brian McInnis on November 1, 2019

For the first time in its eight years as a member of the Big West Conference, the Hawaii soccer team is through to the league’s postseason tournament. After UH (6-7-3, 4-1-2 BWC) put itself on the cusp of qualifying with Thursday’s 3-2 win at UC Davis, the rest was taken care of for the Wahine when UC Irvine lost in overtime at Cal Poly, 3-2, on Friday. “We were all watching at our hotel. Oh jeez. My heart,” coach Michele […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Bob Nash to have jersey retired

By Brian McInnis on November 1, 2019

It’s about time. Hawaii hoops legend Bob Nash will become the first Rainbow Warriors player to have his jersey formally retired, the school announced on Friday. Nash represented dependability as a person and as a player for the program spanning decades. UH will conduct the ceremony on Feb. 15 against UC Irvine. It will be part of UH’s 100th season initiative in 2019-20. Special themes for the Fabulous Five — of which Nash was a prominent member — and the 100th […]

Hawaii soccer: Everything on the table

By Brian McInnis on October 31, 2019

FINAL: Hawaii came up with a huge road victory in a wild, hostile match, 3-2 at UC Davis. The Rainbow Wahine had to rally from down 2-1 with 34 minutes left when Davis’ Janae Gonzalez put in her second penalty-kick goal of the match, and Kayla Ryan delivered with her team-best sixth and seventh goals of the season on set-ups by teammates. “To be perfectly honest, I was just really impressed with the team and their composure and their mental […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Webster sees point guard duty against Chaminade

By Brian McInnis on October 31, 2019

The question of what happens when Drew Buggs needs a breather was apparently answered on Wednesday night. Hawaii will put the ball in the hands of true freshman Justin Webster. It was baptism by fire for Webster, the Rainbow Warriors’ new secondary point guard, in an 83-66 preseason exhibition victory over Division II neighbor Chaminade at the Stan Sheriff Center. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. CHAMINADE The Silverswords were a small but tenacious outfit that pressed relentlessly for much of […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Freshman Davies’ debut cut short

By Brian McInnis on October 30, 2019

Olivia Davies made a good first impression in her limited time on the Stan Sheriff Center floor on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for Davies and Hawaii, it’s not clear when the true freshman will get a chance at a second. The 5-foot-9 guard went down clutching her left leg after playing just four first-quarter minutes in the Rainbow Wahine’s 76-71 exhibition victory over Hawaii Pacific. She returned to the bench in the second half on crutches and with her leg heavily […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Freshman Calhoun tabbed as starting point guard

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2019

The lineup is coming together a bit for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. Eighth-year Rainbow Wahine coach Laura Beeman hinted at some of her rotation before practice on Monday afternoon, a day before the Wahine were to play Hawaii Pacific in a 7:30 exhibition at the Stan Sheriff Center. It sounds like at least two of the team’s four freshmen will get a chance to make an impact. That’s especially true for 5-foot-5 Nae Nae Calhoun, of Riverside, Calif., who […]

Rainbow Forecast: Huge week for Hawaii football, volleyball, soccer; basketball teams host exhibitions

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2019

As fate would have it, this week aligned for Hawaii’s three primary fall sports in one sense — all three face pivotal conference matchups that have championship implications. Football, coming off its 45-31 win at New Mexico — the first time UH won in Albuquerque since 1987 — hits the crucial portion of its schedule starting this week with the first of four Mountain West West Division opponents, rival Fresno State. If UH (5-3, 2-2 MWC) manages to win out in those […]
