Any insight into why the Big West has no interest in Cal-State Bakersfield?

I think Utah Valley or Southern Utah would be good fits, too.

Love Dru’s spunk but he seems to have become predictable. Even JJ changed the qb pace up with Rolo, Chang, Withy-Allen, Wheidon when he needed to. There seemed to be a gap in the middle of the defense for five games straight that was attacked often. Did we lack the personnel to do the job or we unable to coach up the existing personnel to fix it. As a fan sure there is a lot more going on behind the scenes that I know but hoping we can get it righted with recruiting, player development, and coaching experience.

Fundamentally, schematically, personnel use, on-field adjustments – embarrassingly weak this year.

If the Coordinators don’t change, Rolo’s career as a HC for ANY FBS team will be a short one.

IMHO…we all know the cupboard was bare when Coach Rolo took over. He did not have the “best options” for coaches also. Evidence the amount of UH coaches that went on to great D1 programs. Do we have good coaches? Did we have good coaches? IIRC, there was a lot of criticism then too. Now after the coaches go on to success at other D1 programs, we lament losing them.
That being said, I can’t get over how many broadcasters comment about the lack of discipline or technique about our O and D play. One comment from a respected and successful UH coach, opined ..”coaching is the issue” (paraphrasing).Coaching, discipline or lack of execution? ALL seems to be the issue. Based on last years performances, we were chosen to finish second in the division. That all went down hill fast after the fourth game. I’m just hoping the team did not “learn” to lose.
We clear out this season and build for next. The student athletes we have are committed and doing their best. These kids are the ones who matter.
IMUA WARRIORS!

We all can wish for better results but in the end, you still put it on the line and played the game.

My hope going forward is for Coach Rolo to re-evaluate the staff. For our team to not show any improvement whatsoever, you have to start with coaching. The work starts now and needs to go 24/7. Im all UH to the core and always will be.

root cause: coaching staff and its ability to coach up the players; schemes called; player execution; discipline? one of the above, some of the above, all of the above?

how does a player react to an offensive/defensive call they know will not work? some will go all out to make it work – others will give a “token” effort?

ever take a close look/notice of how each player takes to pre-game warm ups? easy to spot those who are just going thru the motions!

yes, there are many areas to address NOW to make 2018 a much better season and it may all start on 12/20/2017 when early signing will occur — maybe an indication of what’s to come.

someone said – “never hire a friend or family member because it will be difficult decision to discipline or let go”

now, it will be Coach Rolo’s turn to evaluate and decide — if he does nothing, IMHO, it does not bode well for him and the 2018 football season — fanciful doings does not “trump” winning on the field to build fan support and donating $$$

I presume many of us will be closely watching his decisions

ST: did you say that Rolo has made position coach offers already when you wrote who said he didn’t”

despite this season’s awful results, we will purchase season tickets next year and attend games

However, it is a long transition period to full Div I status.

Been keeping my powder dry all season.

Time to “fire for effect”

The last HC was effectively doing no recruiting during the last half of his last season. When Rolo and his staff walked in to the FB offices and looked at the recruiting board and saw the joke of a recruiting board they realized the magnitude of the task at hand but pressed on.

Rolo said when he was putting the staff together that he was looking for guys who (my words, not his) viewed Hawaii as “aina” and not a stepping stone.

I think he is trying to do the same with the players while at the same time applying some actual recruiting principles (roster needs, class projections, prospect likelihoods, etc.) along with some solid recruiters (aka Assistant Coaches).

It cannot be overstated how behind the curve this team was in player personnel. This is no reflection on the character or motivation of any of the players on the team but the results of the last 1-2 seasons of the previous regime speak for themselves.

In season 1, Rolo (or any new HC, for that matter) will rely on pulling out any and all stops to utilize any available resources to pull out the best result. Hawaii went to the Hawaii Bowl (barely)…JJ produced the “greatest turnaround in NCAA history”, and so on.

Season 2 is another story. As another post indicates, once the conference has a season of video it becomes near impossible to hide lack of talent with “smoke and mirrors”.

From what I see nothing will change if we don’t recruit better players.

Very True.

I. for one, believe that may start to come to be seen on the field next season. This coaching crew has already shown, albeit at different levels, that they have been able to build programs the right way thru finding the right players in the living rooms and kitchens of recruits. Rolo has resisted pulling the redshirts off the shelf too early this season and selfishly blown a year of their eligibility. I hope it starts to pay off come next fall.

Z, it’s not the players. It’s the coaching staff.

Really? Some others have been saying the “answer” is bring in the Lee Brothers. Ask them what happened once the rules changed that DQ’d 3 of their top players from the 2000 Prep Bowl?

Others have been all over QB1 and lamenting Rolo for “not offering” or “letting” the Mililani QB get away to UCF. As the Blog Host has stated (several times) they offered and he chose to go.
I not going 2nd guess him…he liked the HC based on his results at the school with the shining Knight with buku bux his new gig in the middle of the hotbed of all that receiver speed….just saying.

This is a long post and was written over a long while so if others have posted in the meantime, sorry.

Das it.
