Sometimes people have a year left but feel it’s time to move on. Aaron Novoa could have played in 2016 but he already earned a degree and it was expensive to be a walkon with no guarantee of playing time as Sanchez’s backup

You also can exceed 25 initials if a player is awarded a blueshirt after training camp opens. That player would count toward the following year’s class but eligible to play this year. But that player would have to initially join as a walkon. And there are no guarantees he would be awarded a scholarship.

Max initials are 25 per year.
BUT you cannot exceed 85 scholarship players on the team at any time.
someone estimated that there were about 65 scholarship players after accounting for all the graduating and end of eligibility players.
That would mean that there are only 20 or so initials available.
Andrew Ho is graduating early and leaving the program with a year of eligibility left in search of a graduate school for his Cal teaching credentials. So that might be another one.
