Wittek, Tupai back practicing

Quarterback Max Wittek was back competing at practice today — and with the first-team offense. After starting the first six games, Wittek did not play against New Mexico because of knee ailments.

Left guard Elijah Tupai, who also missed Saturday’s game, practiced with the first team today.

Eperone Moananu had a successful first day at nose tackle after moving from the offensive line. He made all four tackles in a series during the team session. Moananu, who is from American Samoa, is considered to be on “loan” to the injury-depleted defense. Many predict Moananu, a true freshman, can develop into an all-league offensive lineman.

That’s interesting abotut Moananu. I thought his size was ideal for the nose, but it’s good news that he’s that good an O-lineman.

Does NC prescribe to the “cannot lose your starting job due to injury” rule?

your #48 post from yesterday’s blog

I read your statement several times and could not understand what you’re telling me

like you say, continue to be a fan! yep, that truly describes the A-House family – been season ticket holders since September 1969 when I returned from military service – wife says the only way she would see me is if she came along to sporting events – yikes!!!!!

still a cloudy day and sunshine struggling to penetrate the scattered clouds – Manoa valley still cloaked in darkness – still looking for that elusive “rainbow”!

how goes the 2016 recruiting class?

nothing since the 2 LA players committed to UH – how many scholarships remaining? other way is how many taken to date?

much anxiety as we all wait to see what Matlin will do

LTUH Fan, Florida Ted, Ragasu Bagasu, Calvin from Kona and Big Hilo Fan – what say you from up above? just as noisy as down here?

seems to me that even if they get a new coach, is he going to be able to miraculously heal those injured players and win games? being injured is not an excuse, it’s the fact. those “big named teams” brought in money but cost the team in injuries. I guess that is better than raising money the way you should. and, you all should know that even if a new coach is needed, it will take the ones in charge many, many months and many, many committees and a lot of money to figure it out, only to end up in the same spot. I say keep coach until the end of the season. if they rehire a previous coach, we are cancelling our season’s tickets from 1979.

  17. nutmegger October 20, 2015 2:20 pm

    1) Money. 2) Geography. 3) Coaching. 4) Recruiting.
These are the factors that contribute to the success of Warrior Football.
The AD’s priority should be the first – I think he understands this. All Hawaii companies should be approached for contributions. All contributions should be acknowledged and rewarded somehow (one free game ticket at the low end to season passes at the high end). An area in the stands could be set aside for the contributers.
Can’t do anything about the second.
Regarding the third, I think there are management processes that could alleviate some of the problems. For instance:
    a) Since the money is short, UH should target young up and coming coaches to hire. Women’s basketball coach is an excellent example of success.
    b) HC contracts should be for no more than 3 years with a guaranteed 1 yr extension for a W-L record of not less than 8-4 in either the second or third year.
Recruiting should focus on Polynesia, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska.

  18. Buffoman October 20, 2015 2:47 pm

As I see it there will be no coaching change unless the following happens. This opinion comes from the fact that the UH has embarrassed itself with the recent rash of bad contracts and huge payouts.

So there will only be a change if the current coach steps down.

Or, there is a very large donation to the UH to buyout the remaining amount due to execute a clean buyout.

Then there needs to be another very large donation made to pay the difference from the base that would be established and the actual cost to secure a new coach. There would also have to be additional dollars raised to allow that via h to secure the support staff he would like in place as I assume most would come from the mainland (and we know the cost of living in the islands).

There will be no help from the Legislature for this and as UH is asking them for an additional $16M I highly doubt they would happily give more for an athletic program that just paid out $1.4M to part with the basketball coach due to a poor contract.

So, as a long time fan I support the team in its entirety and will continue to be a part of the Saturday fan base (since 1965). If there is a change I will support what is there.

You can tell when a coaches time is near the end or when he’s ready to get fired. All of a sudden he becomes a players coach and praises them every chance he gets. Chow got emotional when asked about Sanchez’s missed FG. He almost started crying when he praised how wonderful a guy Sanchez was. Don’t know if the emotion was about Sanchez or the fact that Nevada will be his last game coached. Yep, his time is near the end, should be coming soon.

What are the odds that an assistant coach gets to be an interim coach for two different schools in two different and consecutive years. No one will want to hire him for fear of the jinx!

  24. truegreen October 20, 2015 3:58 pm

#22 primo: it would even be his third time total as an interim head coach since he served that role for Boise St in the ’90s too.

  25. tempmanoa October 20, 2015 4:41 pm

I hope someone makes the right decision if Wittek starts over Woolsely. So far Wittek has not played a game as well as Woolsey’s best games from last year or for that matter Woolsey’s game vs New Mexico (unless you count the UC Davis game– UC Davis a 1 and 6 team ranked No. 200 on the Sagarin ratings compared to UH at No. 124). Woolsey ran the offense better than we have seen it so far. We are still wating for Wittek to pick things up..

  26. Come on, Man! October 20, 2015 5:00 pm

“being injured is not an excuse, it’s the fact. those “big named teams” brought in money but cost the team in injuries.”

are we really making the argument that ohio state and wisconsin are SO GOOD (or that the UH football team is so soft) that they singlehandedly decimated the UH team with injuries because UH players were too beat up and exhausted by the big bad boys from the midwest?

man. that really says a lot about what people think of UH players just as athletes. maybe we need to fire the strength and conditioning coach instead.

  27. Come on, Man! October 20, 2015 5:04 pm

“Woolsey ran the offense better than we have seen it so far. We are still wating for Wittek to pick things up..”

no idea why people want to blame things on max wittek. woolsey ran the offense better… against fellow cupcake cellar dweller team New Mexico. he looked pretty terrible in all the other games that he came in as relief for Max. Wittek is a good quarterback on a very bad team and imo still deserves the start.

just preparing for the future and putting the best first.

  41. A-House October 20, 2015 7:07 pm

while upper campus has publicized the Gib Arnold settlement, they should also tell Hawaii where the money will be charged against – it is OUR money via taxes we all pay

if the Pres or Chancellor says UHAD, there is a very serious accountability problem at their level and the BOR – did the UHAD write/approve the contract?

taking responsibility is tough, but a lot better than pushing it off to another

  42. Dano October 20, 2015 7:13 pm

4 or 5 years ago when UH played at Florida, Ted drove nearly 2 hours one-way from his home to meet with us at the Golden Coral in Orlando which was close to the Cabana Bay Resort; our hotel in May 2015.

A-house, as I walked through the tailgate section looking for my “Warrior Ohana” last week a few Lobo fans yelled out some interesting things! I yelled back some things we use on the South Side of Chicago in response! Believe me when I tell you. It was not in Aloha spirit-you mock me or my team you get what’s coming to you. Sat in a section that is considered a luxury box. I was vocal and all but the last two minutes I was gettin looks that would kill-it’s good to be a Warrior no matter what!

#26, Here are Wittek’s best QB Ratings from ESPN, eliminating the understandably bad games vs Nationally ranked teams OSU, UW, and Boise:
UCDavis (FCS Team, Record 1-6, Sagarin Rank #200) 47.0
    Colorado 21.0
    San Diego State 34.4
Here are Woolsey’s best ESPN QB Ratings”
    San Diego State 2014 55.0
    Utah State 2014 52.0
    U Washington 2014 47.1
    New Mexico 2015 48.1

  58. tom-warriornation October 21, 2015 3:40 am

Question: At all road games; should we start a tradition of all Hawaii fans to wear white; and wave white towels to show the players that there are UH fans that support them (since white stands out; and white represents the visiting team?). Players/coaches: will this pump you up? Football is an emotional game; and any visual support goes a long way, right?

  59. Maddog50 October 21, 2015 4:43 am

Ok so we have Moananu over on D and I assume it’s because of Rasmussen is out with an ankle or something close. Shawley is out due to personal issues. I realize a lot of things can enter ones life and things change, but if he is gone we should just say he is gone. I wish for him and us That was not the case because I believe he brought energy even though undersized he played his butt off. If he is gone for good I wish him the best. So now it is on to Nevada. You know a lot of players on this team and many other teams have a story to tell and express gratitude to have that second chance-now here is the time to summon that energy and drive to overcome the odds ahead-10 plays separate this team from its current record to a much better one. How bout gettin it done this week! Go Warriors!

But in Max favor..he had a very good game we won first…guess he was 100 % then…
maybe now not so…just coach not wait to long to make the change if not moving the chains…

  66. H-Man October 21, 2015 9:41 am

Utah St went conservative in their 2nd half against Boise St, but they were up 35 pts, not 10! I wonder if HC Chow learned something, or is he still telling himself that we could have won if the FG kicker made the kick, rather than keep the offense going through the 3rd quarter to increase the lead by 17 points, then maybe go to the clock eating offense?

  67. st. anthony trojan October 21, 2015 9:43 am

INYOFACE…. maybe because…their lives n starting position is not at stake…while the good ones is sitting on the bench…cuz have ‘to save’ maybe a better red shirt.. n they know it ??
