85–you’re right in that point. Tim Lyons was the starter prior to Ralph Cherry, and Ralph really didn’t have a real backup-but the composition of the teams were really different back then. We had more than a few guys, on D, who went onto play on Sundays – Miano,Niko, ml Johnson,Colin Scott’s, tui, John Taylor …etc and that’s not even counting Alvis, Anthony Woodson, and all the kafenztis brothers. The D kept us in many games, always was up for a big play, and never really got steamrolled.

The nature of college ball is centered around O, and thus coaching is also slanted that way. But those early 80s teams while not the biggest around were gamers, and some really tough sobs….but, I’m not objective.

I wouldn’t rank Mike Stennis and Tim Lyons as all-time great QBs in UH history, but they won a lot of games because they had a Killer D watching their back.

To all that are talking about Coach Chow being fired, let’s remember one thing and that is this is all about the players who bust their asses on the field and more importantly in the classroom. If you are a Warrior Fan let’s start the ’14 season off w/ a clean slate and back these guys up. Then if things should not pan out it’ll be up to Ben Jay to make that decision but until that time comes I’m hoping for at least a 6-6 season & a Aloha Bowl invite…Imua ‘Bows

Harding is still UH’s not so secret weapon.
Joey is a battering ram.
Yap can still shut down what ever comes his way.
My guess is Woolsey will be a play maker, but in about two months we will know for sure.

I think it was Boolakanaka predicting 7 wins, which is very doable. Gotta believe.

QB prospects 2014 should be able “game manager’s”, strength of team is running back Iosefa, Playaction pass game set up by success of run game, QB starter should be best at making plays from pocket & out of pocket ability. With run game–defense is off field longer, games are shorter. Defense has potential to be stout in front seven based on returning DL & potential of LB’s coached by Clune & Gouveia. Secondary is wait and see, lot of their success will hinge on consistency of pass rush. More zone should allow more opportunities for turnovers, timely man coverage included.

Al,

You are right that it happened many times under JJ. However, I personally feel JJ did a better job of working with the QBs and Oline and nurtured them along.

Could it have been his system? Maybe so, but it sure was exciting for me to see the ball in the air.

while there should be some concern over who is the next qb.
don’t go into panic mode.

we’ve been here before. many times in fact. look back at the times before when june jones got here. how often did we not have a returning starter.

how many other teams have been there done that?

I would be surprised if BJ fired a coach midseason unless there was some kind of scandal. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised BJ gives Chow another year. I think the boiling point for some fans would be if Chow made a bowl game in the fourth year and was given a raise and extension. That would really piss off some folks that are already crying for a coaching change.
