Jeezy33 says Bradlee Anae is the best defensive player in the State. Who’s to dispute him? I don’t think he’s committed yet although he is linked to BYU. BYU doesn’t have a Head Coach yet. Sarkisian is available. I hope Rolo offered Anae a scholarship too. He has a big upside. Reminds me of Hauoli Jamora.

  37. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2015 10:32 am

A long, long time ago, I did a list on UH basketball. One item was on the length of Jimmy Borges’ renditions of the national anthem. He took it with good humor, even “dedicating” the song before a UH game. For our fantasy baseball draft a long time ago, the guy who portrayed the Gecko mascot invited Jimmy to sing the national anthem. He even provided a cassette copy. Jimmy is a jazz legend in a town with a rich vocalist history. He’s in a difficult medical situation is. But, as always, he handles it with style.

  38. Jeezy33 December 7, 2015 10:38 am

    32. It’s definitely disputable. I haven’t watched every team on the island play. But I’ve watched 3 Kahuku games and he’s dominated all of them with his 6-4 frame to fill out. I haven’t seen Leilehua play so Muti could be better. I think Kapoi is dominant but doesn’t have Anae upside. Ace Faumui is the best offensive player in D2 . But he projects as a SS so he could arguably be the best if he was a full time defensive player.

A lot of guys love keala santiago. Only thing holding me back is the Kahuku front line was so dominant that his job was so easy to make plays. In college it will be different .. I saw him get beat numerous times by Mililani wrs. But 3rd string Qb couldn’t make the throws and DL was harassing all day. Still hope he considers Hawaii

I literally just went to Yahoo and one of the fresh headlines is Sark just sued USC over his firing, claiming USC did not accommodate for his “disease”.

I think Sark is putting himself into a place where nobody will even consider him as a HC again.

He just needs to accept his firing, get the help he needs for his alcohol abuse, and when he’s cleared, start working hard to get back to being a HC again. This isn’t like the Gib Arnold situation where the school defaulted on the terms ($1.4M payment owed) of his termination. Sark suing USC only seems counter productive in his situation.

  55. Former UH Athlete December 7, 2015 12:31 pm

Temple Head Coach Matt Rhule just signed a new 6-year contract, after reaching the AAC Title Game (loss to Houston) and after just signing a 4-year extension before the 2015 season.

    2015 Salary (under the extension) = $648k

I’m guessing his new contract will be at least double what it was this season, if not more. For reference, $1.4M is about the 50 percentile for AAC coaches.

This is how you take care of a football coach at a low budget program. This is the model at which UH should hope for with Rolo. Pay him dirt cheap to start, then extend as performance thresholds hit, then if he hits paydirt, immediately lock him up long term at competitive salary. That way, if he does leave, UH should be receiving a hefty buyout if Rolo leaves early.

  56. seewhy December 7, 2015 12:38 pm

    49.

Hopefully the future attorneys who write these contracts will be smart enough to implement those factors and clauses.

We all bought Chow Time shirts when Chow was hired, and we all ended up burning our shirts on the charcoal after the second season of Chow Time. We’ll wait and see with Rolo. I wish him luck but not expecting much.

  61. Balko December 7, 2015 12:47 pm

Regarding Steve Sarkisian suing USC, you may not like it but the Federal Government defines alcoholism as a disease that is covered under the Americans with Disability Act. Employers must accommodate the treatment and care of that individual.

He’ll win this lawsuit because the university inadequately accommodated his illness, and he will get re-hired elsewhere because head coaches with tier one D1 experience are rare.

BTW, if you’re an employer in Hawaii and you don’t know that alcoholism is a condition covered by the Americans with Disability Act, you’re vulnerable to a significant lawsuit.

    #32 & #35,

Gotta agree that Anae also reminds me of former Kahuku DE (and former UW DE/OLB and current New Orleans Saints OLB) Hauoli Kikaha (former Jamora) with his high motor & get-off explosiveness.

Kikaha was listed at just 6-2, 190 his junior season before maturing to his senior season to 6-3, 230…..about the same size that Anae is now.

While Anae is rush DE/OLB, JMHO that Muti (still only 17 years old) will eventually mature/grow into a NG/DT or OG.

  66. kapakahi December 7, 2015 1:03 pm

Hopefully retaining Cookus will help UH land ILB Kaelin Himphill (Liberty HS, Oregon)….

Not sure if this article from Maui News was posted. But cool interview with Reinhardt. Fills a need at LB left by Gener considering he can cover in space and only JGW is a proven returnee that can cover TEs. But injuries always occur so we need maybe 1 more LB along with Reinhardt. I prefer a bigger LB to pair with Reinhardt in Jordan Kunaszyk.

  77. jeezy33 December 7, 2015 1:52 pm

    73. No thank you. Our recruiting pipeline would be limited. I hope one coach has a Texas connection. Rolo seems like he knows the Nor Cal area. Abe has So Cal. Cookus has some Oregon- Utah I think. Lance Samuseva hasn’t recruited. Naeole is still learning how to connect with 17 year olds. He’s making progress with his twitter account. Nate is way too experienced.

  78. cappie the dog December 7, 2015 1:53 pm

    37.

    I was there.

    I remember that dedication.

I have always respected his wish not to sing “Hawaii Pono’i”.

If he doesn’t feel comfortable singing what could be perceived as a politically-charged song, especially in juxtaposition with “The Star-Spangled Banner”, that’s fine.

Jimmy Borges is somebody that always hovered in the background of my life.

Not explicitly a fan, but the potential loss of him fills me with sadness.

He is somebody who was around during my childhood; he is somebody my parents and grandparents liked.

    A life well-lived.

    Through the eyes of another…
Bradley Anae probably would develope in to a fine OT.

I love Keala Santiago. He’s a football player. Is he fast enough to be a safety or CB in D1? Perhaps a nickel or a great slot receiver?

Ace Faumui, another great HS football player. Where do you play him? To me as a LB.

The hitch with most of our skill position boys this year might be lack of top end foot speed.

  95. 3-Prong December 7, 2015 3:04 pm

Ace Faumui is a talented player with a lot of athletic ability, along with the frame to grow at 6’2. Problem is that he was held out of Radford’s first few games due to poor grades from last spring at Kalani HS (I believe that’s how the OIA works). He MAY have to go the JUCO route.

  100. PONO December 7, 2015 4:21 pm

Did I miss something that Rigo is not coming back to the program? Isn’t he only a junior with one more year remaining?

  101. Brother Mike December 7, 2015 4:22 pm

Borges said that his slow rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner was intended to let people appreciate the words and meaning of the song. Big Bro chided him about it so much, Borges left him a message during our interview yesterday: “If you’re asleep one night and all of a sudden you hear an extra-slow version of the Star-Spangled Banner in your ear, that me!”

  102. Ipu Man December 7, 2015 4:45 pm

  106. Balko December 7, 2015 5:01 pm

Suing the National Women’s Soccer Team?

Yes, that will be a real winning PR move. They are the darlings of the media, Hawaii will just look like bullying, misogynistic, out-of-touch yokels.

Time to suck it up and go away quietly.

  107. oldtimer808 December 7, 2015 5:24 pm

The soccer team could have handled the situation a lot better than to only think of themselves. As always when you only consider yourself first instead of others there will always be a ripple effect. Unfortunately for the soccer fans who purchased tickets and for those who flew in from the neighbor islands this was a slap in their face. Who wants to celebrate a victory tour of a bunch of prima donnas.

  108. Balko December 7, 2015 5:31 pm

No offense, but offended Hawaii fans won’t affect the team in the least. It is a small sub-population of a small state, and people on the mainland will focus on the health and safety of the female players and the unequal treatment.

The power of the athlete is on the rise. We saw it with the Missouri college football team, and will see a lot more as the fall ESPN continues (annual layoffs, declining subscription fees, and so on). See for example: The Sports Bubble Is About to Pop: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/12/06/the-sports-bubble-is-about-to-pop.html

    See for example: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonbelzer/2015/10/18/the-nfl-should-be-investing-in-marijuana-if-it-wants-to-survive/

    83. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he was a really old school parent and told his kid to avoid social media all together. And I bet Naeole, like Chow, prefer handwriting letters that take forever… Remember Chow said the coaches write 50?? Geez

  115. Jeezy33 December 7, 2015 6:02 pm

    93. You can’t really Determine yet. A lot depends on how each kid grows physically and the type of speed and athleticism they develop.
Ex. Pilares Rb in high school, got way faster and ended up being a great slot. Owens I think was a RB. Lono Manners turned safety from Rb. I think Faumui is. Strong safety.

Linemen another mystery too. I think Lafaele played C at farrington. Developed in DT. Wayne Hunter DE turned OT.

We have a huge need on DL so I would imagine the DL recruits get first crack on defense

  116. Balko December 7, 2015 6:03 pm

Actually hand written notes are part of contemporary colleges coaches way of wooing recruits: signals someone took the extra time to write to a recruit. Basically, if a coach isn’t hand writing letters to recruits today, they are deficient in best practices recruiting techniques.

    #98,

FYI…..Rigo was excused from the last UL-Monroe game to fly back to Cali to be with his family following the unexpected passing of his grandmother.

#105 – what would you do if you felt your workplace was unsafe, posed a higher than normal risk to your physical well being and livelihood?

ST, Thanks for the May We Suggest blog. I love your suggestions and wish Rolo the best of luck. Going to need your help to followup on walk on tryout WR Malik Lockett? Seems he got lost in the shuffle with Chow. What say you? I saw his name on the UH recruiting list in 2011 . We lost him twice? Let’s not lose him again.

  127. cappie the dog December 7, 2015 8:35 pm

    107.

Maybe I’ve seen “Hoosiers” one too many times.

I like how the Gene Hackman character gives “Scooter” a second chance.

This is Division I football, not a charity, and, of course, not the movies, but I still hope that UH has a spot open for its most important player in my lifetime.

Wait just a minute here. How does the Soccer Federation sign off on the field and at the same time not be liable for our expenses when the team pulls out? Business is business. Nothing personal here. What? We didn’t get a signed copy of the contract? SMH

  131. Hakuna Matata December 7, 2015 9:25 pm

    Coach Rolo
Davasyia Hagger would make a good transition into a DE
Dakota Torres would transition well into a OLB
TRUST ME ON THIS..LET THE EYES WORK….EYEBALL THESE TALENTS

  132. sllb December 7, 2015 9:42 pm

Judging from Muti’s highlights, looks like a walking penalty machine. Lots of borderline late hits… not even sure why they would include those in his video. Nothing impressive about laying out 150 lbs. cornerbacks standing around after the play is dead. Definitely an aggressive player but probably needs to be harnessed a bit.

  133. Bryson December 7, 2015 9:52 pm

Something tells me an ex-UCLA lineman will now be a Warrior….Hoping it’s true

  134. oxtail01 December 7, 2015 9:57 pm

After Chow’s “Chasing Championships” fiasco, I’m not about to jinx the team with another proclamation t-shirt. Also, Tsai should be the last guy suggesting anyone as assistant coaches, especially after how blind he’s been with Chow and his players and their capabilities.

  135. kapakahi December 7, 2015 10:04 pm

Sounds like……Auwae had a good home visit from Rolo & Naeole!

  136. Jeezy33 December 7, 2015 10:06 pm

I think now every fan that has Twitter realizes what I mean when I said Norm Chow didn’t embrace social media and didn’t know how to connect with the fans. With Rolo doing it now, I can no longer be labeled a hater.. This is what I’ve wanted all along for years

Love the way Kalakaua Timoteo is beating the drum for a “chain reaction” of local commits to follow the two Mililani commits.

  140. Jeezy33 December 7, 2015 10:36 pm

    138. Comes down to need and limited amount of scholarships. With Ursua being a FR and similar type role, Noa best bet will be grey shirt or walk on and earn a scholarship like Owens did IMO.

  141. S.peezy55 December 7, 2015 10:50 pm
