they talk them up, into a better opportunity/school, not necessarily anti-hawaii.
why play JV when you good enough for varsity. why play at a mid-major when you have a shot at the big schools. year after year very few top local players choose hawaii. money talks and we all know hawaii is broke.

After spending a lot on tuition for six years or more, they want their kids to select schools like Washington, Cal, Notre Dame, etc. Nothing against Hawaii, but the sheep-skin from those schools carry more weight. It’s when local athletes choose lower academic standing schools over UH that makes me wonder “what were they thinking?” The other factor in selecting mainland options is high-profile football programs like Texas A&M, Oregon, etc. is understandable. UH just has to recruit harder to find good players for its program. Most of these players are found on the mainland, so why worry about local players choosing to go away?

Also, since ST hangs around the athletic department complex a lot, he has insight on many UH sports. 🙂
