I recall Spelman as a DB from Radford. Was surprised to see him kicking for UH. I seem to recall a 50 yarder he kicked that spiraled (versus end over end) through the uprights. Anyone recall that?

Got it, Johnny Masters, 1971-74. Surprising, he is only 20th per punt average, but when he hit it right just soared off the foot. He did have a 70 yard punt. Looks like Sanchez will be the career leader in punt average, better than even Elam. The guy who was really amazing was Morse,1922-25 (almost 42 yard average), which is mind-boggling in those days, unless there was some reason that kicks were not returned then and just left to roll?

Well, it was a guy like him, maybe after or further back then, will have to research it. All I know was that the guy was unassuming looking but could kick the hell out of the ball.

Sorry but I don’t think you remember correctly. Spelman did not punt, at least not in a game.

If I remember correctly, Spelman was a great punter too. I believe he hit a 70+ yarder once. For a guy who was not that tall, I think about 5’9″ and 170 lbs, he had a pretty strong leg and great form at times. Often, he would kick it just right with a perfect aerodynamic spiral that would arch up and over and come down still in a spiral which was hard to catch. When he hit those punts that turned over, they went pretty far (50 yards usually) and had good hang time. Still Jim Asmus was also an impressive punter, being so consistent and with good form and distance, guy was “cool as ice”. Showing my age!!
