Spring ahead

It appears the Nick Rolovich-led Warriors will make their on-field debut as early as late March.

Rolovich said he wants to start spring practice after “the ides of March,” but not have training interrupted with the school’s spring break. UH’s break is scheduled for March 21-25.

(The NCAA permits Division I teams 15 spring practices within a window of 34 consecutive days. The exceptions to the consecutive days are university-sanctioned vacations or examination days.)

Following that calendar and Rolovich’s preferences, spring practices can be held in windows of March 28-April 30 or April 4-May 7. A Saturday ending would be ideal for a spring game or festivities.

    Go Warriors!
    We believe!
    Go Rolo and associates!

  2. PONO December 17, 2015 7:42 am

I agree with Rolo that avoiding the spring break is a good thing.

  3. Tom-warriornation December 17, 2015 7:53 am

    Sugar Bowl or bust!
We should change our mind-set and set high goals; we need to get that magic back from our undefeated season!

  4. Ipu Man December 17, 2015 8:02 am

A Spring Game would be interesting with returning
starters versus new kids on the block. Hmmmm…

  5. seewhy December 17, 2015 8:10 am

I hope they still continue to bring the Spring game to the outer islands. It was a great way to reach out to the neighbor island fans.

  6. Stephen Tsai December 17, 2015 8:11 am

The Sugar Bowl was a long process.
After blowout losses against Boise State and Fresno State in 2004, people wanted to dump JJ. Then the Warriors rallied to reach the Hawaii Bowl.
Two significant things happened in 2005: The Warriors had a great recruiting class (Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Adam Leonard, Solomon Elimimian, etc.) and Jerry Glanville was hired as DC. Glanville set the tone and, as JJ’s buddy, helped make football fun again.
The following year, the team had a great run before losing to Oregon State in the regular-season finale. People actually were down after that, but then two more things happened: The Warriors rallied to beat Arizona State and then Brennan announced he was returning for his senior season.
The Warriors perfect 2007 regular season could have unraveled except for the great defensive stand against Louisiana Tech, the Iceman’s 45-yard field goal at Nevada, and Brennan’s heroics (as well as Blaze Soares’ forced fumble) at San Jose State.
It takes a lot of little things to make something big.

I’m sure, at the least, they can revive coaches’ clinics on the non-Oahu islands.

  9. seewhy December 17, 2015 8:25 am

    8.

I sure hope so. I still remember when UH played their season opener at War Memorial Stadium. Rolo was there.

  10. Andrew December 17, 2015 8:50 am

Watching youtube clips of the 2007 season is like watching videos from your childhood. You watch it because you don’t remember what it as like back then.

  11. Warrior Dave December 17, 2015 8:56 am

Great info on the process to the Sugar Bowl Stephen. Brought back good memories.

  12. Phatdawg December 17, 2015 8:56 am

Any word on what will happen with UH’s Pro day this year? Is new coaching staff going to help the outgoing players? Plus, does the team have any pro prospects for the up coming NFL draft? I really didn’t like the way UH shared time with SDSU the past few years.

    only possible is Ben Clarke

    6. I believe the fumble at San Jose State was first thought to have been caused by Blaze Soares but replay showed it was the arm of Mike Lafaele which caused it.

  19. Legistlature December 17, 2015 11:30 am

All it takes is one team…???
Does this give all players and incentive/motivation to attend an NFL pro day.
Chasing Championships….cost $$ & time..Is it for the experience of showcasing what you got to the paid evaluators of the game at these pro days..
    Ok..critique now

  20. Legistlature December 17, 2015 11:38 am

Me thinks today or tomorrow would be ideal to announce your coaching additions to the team
    Who?? will find out
What?? The fans and players are eager to know
    Where?? This Land called Hawaii
    When?? The sooner the better
Why?? Because we need some real news to get excited about

    have some of this then

  27. Derek December 17, 2015 12:26 pm

Riverside CC has Abraham Reinhardt to UH, however, UH has not announced that he has made a commitment or signed a letter of intent yet. Maybe right around the corner. But, I liked what I saw on film and he looked to be a very instinctive player and a good tackler. I’m sure he can contribute right away. Note: Riverside had 10 players who signed FBS offers, two with Fresno St.

  28. NotNasti December 17, 2015 12:28 pm

Did you hear about Aloha Stadium’s plan to remove the yellow section before the start of the 2016 season?
    https://massivemango.wordpress.com/2015/12/15/yellow-section-of-aloha-stadium-to-be-removed/

  29. Legistlature December 17, 2015 12:38 pm

β€œIt was a really sad sight to see the stadium so empty this year”, says Don Kendonets, VP of public relations. He continued, β€œWe had an emergency meeting and came up with the only feasible solution.”
Where was He before, to fill seats..shows up now to remove seats..what kind of emergency is this?
Like someone said earlier I have had enuff-Aloha:-)

  30. Legistlature December 17, 2015 12:45 pm

Maybe someone should paint the upper section blue before January
Come January they can’t remove it because only the lower section is yellow
Better yet paint it all YELLOW

  31. Ipu Man December 17, 2015 12:48 pm

If they got to take out seats, take out the endzone seats.
Who wants to sit there? And it will be more scenic.
But leave the yellow seats on both sides

  32. Ipu Man December 17, 2015 12:50 pm

    btw, ST, R.I.P. Friday.
What good is it saying after you’re gone?
    πŸ™‚
    Got you in my prayers.

  33. Legistlature December 17, 2015 12:54 pm

Maybe remove his position seat..yeah yeah das da one

  34. jm2375 December 17, 2015 1:00 pm

    #28 – that’s an Onion-like (i.e., satire) site.

  35. NotNasti December 17, 2015 1:11 pm

    34. jm2375: Oh . . . I get it now. Don Kendonets (Dunkin Donuts)? I’ve been had.

  36. oldtimer808 December 17, 2015 1:18 pm

Another knee jerk reaction to solve a problem…auwe to remove seats to save 6.2 million dollars. What happens if the fans decide to attend the games. Will the stadium then decide to install the seats again because the stadium could have sold 40000 seats. Lost sales and added cost to put the seats back in. Instead of removing the seats, do some creative marketing to get the fans back in the seats.

  37. oldtimer808 December 17, 2015 1:20 pm

I don’t think removing seats is doing Rolo a favor by making the stadium seem to be full. What are these idiots thinking about?

  38. clyde December 17, 2015 1:37 pm

Come on, folks. The stadium “story” is a satirical piece.

  39. Legistlature December 17, 2015 1:45 pm

    Don Kendonets
they resort to deception to save themselves
Your sins are telling your mouth what to say.
Your words are based on clever deception.

  40. Shoichi December 17, 2015 2:39 pm

That massive mango website is a satirical site…just like the Onion, etc. even says satire at the bottom…Not “real” news.

  41. oldtimer808 December 17, 2015 2:40 pm

Freaking Massive Mango punked us and I fell for it lol funny

  42. oldtimer808 December 17, 2015 2:45 pm

I never heard of The Massive Mango until now lol…

  43. oldtimer808 December 17, 2015 2:46 pm

I wonder if our state government uses The Massive Mango writers for deceptive purposes for the rail and other projects.

  44. cappie the dog December 17, 2015 2:58 pm

    Here is some useful spam.

Don’t be fooled by the title “The Assassin”(now playing at Kahala Theaters), and that it’s being billed as a “xushu” film. It’s probably a deconstruction of the martial arts film.

It’s not “House of the Flying Daggers”; it’s not “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.

Hou Hsiao-Hsien films are characterized by long takes, minimal camera movement, and inert storytelling.

I suspect that “The Assassin” is an art film with a capital “A”.

    Cineastes only.

I promise you will fall asleep.

  45. BrandonB December 17, 2015 3:11 pm

do we have a defensive coordinator yet?

  46. AllG December 17, 2015 3:23 pm

ST, any news if we will sign any JC players during those early signing period?

  47. islandman December 17, 2015 4:19 pm

I Rolo said no early signings, on Call the Coach.

  48. mytake December 17, 2015 4:22 pm

Taking away the yellow section is the dumbest thing I ever heard of.

  49. BrandonB December 17, 2015 4:35 pm

a full looking stadium is better than an empty looking one.

  50. oldtimer808 December 17, 2015 5:12 pm

#46 that was not real. The Massive Mango writes fake news. No get punked like me lol.

  51. 808 warrior fan December 17, 2015 6:11 pm

#46 “mytake” … AMEN TO THAT … I sit in the Yellow and enjoy the view from there and can watch the plays develop … DUMB IDEA BY NARROW MINDED PEOPLE PAID TO MAKE SMART DECISIONS

  52. A-House December 17, 2015 6:55 pm

perhaps ST will post some real juicy tidbits before leaving the house for his angio procedure tomorrow – like coaching selections or JC LOIs or a highly recruited player from the mainland or local or down under

  53. Warrior Dave December 17, 2015 7:00 pm

Best wishes for your procedure tomorrow Stephen. May your doctor have a steady hand.

  54. A-House December 17, 2015 7:14 pm

whomever is being given credit for “closing the yellow section” may not translate to the actual removal of the seats, but blocking the yellow section.

  55. oldtimer808 December 17, 2015 7:43 pm

You too A-House…this yellow section thing was a fake story from The Massive Mango

  56. wow laulau. December 17, 2015 8:17 pm

Does Rolo have all of his coaching hires in place?

  57. Warrior Dave December 17, 2015 10:20 pm

Actually Ben Jay did a study to close the yellow section and relocating season ticket holders. Savings was nominal and wasn’t worth all the disgruntled fans. But yes the story as linked above is fake.

  58. rundown808 December 17, 2015 11:07 pm

Thanks for Countdown preview ST. Made for some good and not so good conversation. I’m in agreement with Derek about blueshirts. Not a good thing. A true walk on should be able to earn it on the spot. However, talk about punters, kickers, QB, DE, DT, blah, blah, blah. What about our skilled players? Did we forget that someone needs to catch the ball? Omg, are we getting that far deep where we forgot about where we failed at offensively. Our receiving corp just disappreared. Drop balls, poor route running, no speed, seperation, or lack of technical skills? Cmon, let’s get it together. WE Need technicians as WR and slots. Speed, agility, hands, eyes, feet, route running, seperation, explosiveness, agressive, a technician on field. Yup, thats on my wishlist for Christmas. I wish that for UH. You got a walk on tryout that never made the roster this season. From Hawaii but played out of FL. Let’s hope he’s part of that list.

  59. Legistlature December 18, 2015 12:43 am

Father in heaven, Lord I pray today that your awesome power (at the command of your voice) would be heard by stephen during this surgery procedure. That you would comfort him with your presence assuring him of the spiritual life that can be found in believing in you, trusting in you, repenting of his sins and (confessing with his mouth) accepting you as his lord and savior.
For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen

  60. SteveM December 18, 2015 12:46 am

Best wishes on your procedure this morning, ST.
If you need more time to recuperate I heard that Tsai-ko Santa will load up the sleigh with Tsai-ko size elves (2-3 oughta fit and still stay under the 1,250 lb capacity) and come over to your place to cheer you up! Can’t you hear the ho-ho-his already? Wait, is that Bulla or Santa?
Anyway, I’ll bring the karaoke microphones to hook to your TV. πŸ™‚

  61. cappie the dog December 18, 2015 3:51 am

Mr. Tsai, you’re going to miss the opening day of “The Force Awakens”. This may be a good thing, though. More elbow room if you wait a couple days.

When “The Phantom Menace” hit the screens in 1999, I went to Pearl Highlands and sat with a capacity crowd, bored out of my mind. I leaned over to my cousin, and whispered: “Staring at your radio would have been more fun.” Hawaii was playing Texas Christian in the WAC playoffs while Jar Jar Binks was blowing my mind(in the wrong way).

    Take care, sir.

And may the force be with you.

  62. Ipu Man December 18, 2015 7:33 am
