On to the next phase

Trevor Davis, Ikaika Woolsey and Jared Leaf
Trevor Davis, Ikaika Woolsey and Jared Leaf

Jared Leaf overcome a stomach ailment that caused him to lose more than 25 pounds as a UH freshman.

In 2014, he was hospitalized in critical conditions from severe burns suffered in an apartment fire in San Jose.

But it was the effects of post-concussion syndrome that forced Leaf to announce his retirement from football today.

Leaf departed UH after the 2012 season to join San Jose State, but he always maintained ties with the Warriors. After last year’s game at San Jose, three 2012 UH teammates — Leaf, California wideout Trevor Davis and quarterback Ikaika Woolsey — posed for a reunion picture.

Leaf, whose stepfather is former Saint Louis School quarterback Erin Hall, is smart, funny and a talented thespian. His impersonation of Denzel Washington’s “Training Day” character is a classic that might be available somewhere on Youtube.

We wish Leaf the best in the next phase of his life.

It was a good practice today.
    Mostly special teams.
I tell ya, John Ursua is going to be something special. He did really well in yesterday’s Scout Bowl. He did well today as Air Force’s quarterback.

    ST,

There are actually several people I know giving away tickets to this week’s game because they have no interest in going.

If your cousin, or whoever you mentioned in a post a few days ago needs 2 tickets let me know.

Let me know if they still want to go and I’ll check. If they do, they come to my tailgate area to pick it up. I don’t do deliveries.

Heartwarming picture of Trevor, Ikaika and Jared.

Here’s an article on Jordan Wynn, volunteer unpaid consultant at Fresno St,

Ursula is not eligible apparently was admitted on some admistrative exception. This team as it is quite frankly underperforming. With the coaching snafus has turned 2 wins into losses. I doubt there are many players being redshirted that would perform better than is what’s on the field. The ability to win the next two and return for a 3 game home stand well we will see. Put stubblefield left Ewaliko rt max protect-bombs away! Hey can I just have Justin V in the backfield on short yardage-I don’t need more Vele-just some!!!! Let’s shoot those Falcons down!!!!!

Watched Ursua’s videos in 2012 when he first committed, and was very impressed by his football and basketball skills. If he’s welcomed and motivated to do so, I’d bet he could contribute to the basketball team, too, like Miah did. Meanwhile, football and academics should be his focus.

    #15,

Yep. I never heard it from him directly, but a former teammate who played here with Trevor told me it was 100% all on Chow that he isn’t here. This teammate of his actually likes Chow and thought he was a good hire so I can’t see him making this up.

  33. H-Man October 29, 2015 1:24 pm

I think it was Trevor’s dad that orchestrated his son’s transfer after meeting with Chow. Conversely, I think it was Zwahlen’s dad, after meeting with Chow, that got Aaron to come to Hawaii. It all balances out.

If we are going to run play Ikaika and run him until his legs fall off. If needed Chow can put in Wittek. We need to run the ball better. I was really impressed with Nevada’s running backs. They were tough.

Vele has disappeared. He used to be a sure-handed receiver out of the back field.

no sense making suggestions to improve the football team cause the “man” not going to listen or implement – hard head – arrogant – to old fashion in how to play the game

other, younger coaches, are passing him by – they are in jet planes while other is in a ‘prop”

  39. Buffoman October 29, 2015 2:43 pm

Yes, he is probably hard headed and a bit arrogant. Who were we speaking about, Chow, Jones? Try telling June to alter his system to run and pound and see what you get. Coaches tend to have a philosophy of doing things and stick by it because they believe in it. In some cases, to a fault.

I’m okay with hard headed coaches. They just have to live with the consequences of their direction.

That’s why as a fan, I too get upset, but this is my team and I will support them even when it is disappointing and until change happens. Losing is disappointing but this is my team and I support it.

  40. st. anthony trojan October 29, 2015 3:00 pm

    # 36…Yes…you are probably right…me not JJ would change his system… the difference is he had a winning record…for the most part… n we all know …Chows record…

Just to some…there is always a few ways to skin a rabbit…my dad taught me one way… n my son does it another way…problem is…does not help the rabbit ne…

So for us ‘rabbits’ sum times…it hurts to be skinned … over n over.. ne way… but with a losing record…it just hurts more…for us it hurts…but for the players…it is painful… n they are the ones who really suffer… because sumone is ‘pakiki’ head…

But not want to talk on the ‘negative side’ 2 much…just not to much positive to say…ST…has the b3st ‘seat’… cuz he can see all the positive that happens in these young men…and report…which is good…

Air Force be flying high Saturday…but that kite be come crashing down…as our defense will cut that string n they will ‘buckaloose’… N END UP CRASHING…

    Hawaii…49…AF…19

  41. Tempmanoa October 29, 2015 3:07 pm

Trevor– a great kid with great parents–was one of the most talented receivers and kick returners we have ever had. The story of how Chow treated him and forced him off the team is just part of Chow’s sad history in this department. Also part of this history is the loss of one of our most talented players (per Dick Tomey) Blake Muir now playing for Baylor who started every game for us as a freshman, and with him went Ben Dew another starting offensive lineman now at Houston. What happened with Blake and Ben has hurt recruiting quality players from Australia and New Zealand (Chow also has been against recruiting from Australia).

  44. H-Man October 29, 2015 4:06 pm

The thing is, if Matlin plans to keep Chow, he will just about have to give him a contract extension of a couple years. It’s a risk. A big risk. If the team continues to lose and doesn’t improve in 2016, then you have him for 2017-18, or pay him a buyout for the two remaining years. That just does not make much sense.

  45. seewhy October 29, 2015 4:11 pm

  49. Not an Expert October 29, 2015 5:11 pm

The more comments of why certain players leaving UH and being starters elsewhere makes you wonder about the HC. He seems to have a stereotype mentality of what he wants and believes in. More like my way or the highway.

  50. kev-1 October 29, 2015 5:15 pm

#40… Is there even such a thing as the “save Chow camp.” If so, it must be pretty lonely there.

Honestly, I have no clue who UH will bring in, but I will be excited as heck whenever they do. Unless of course they bring back the triple option. That offense bores me to tears.

  51. kev-1 October 29, 2015 5:18 pm

Every HC is my way or the highway. That is their right as HC. It just sucks when those my way or the highway decisions leave you scratching your head.

  62. oneseason October 29, 2015 6:59 pm

Interesting discussion on the Sports Animals today about Coach Chow’s seemingly common practice of playing players that cannot practice during the week due to injury. I don’t recall ever hearing this during the previous coach’s tenure, but could well have forgotten. My impression was the Coach Chow would play Schroeder and Iosefa until they broke, but that they were at least well enough to practice.

“I guess state legislature wants no more buyouts.”

too bad UH has autonomy and the legislature has nothing to do with the hiring or firing of football coaches. chow will be gone by the end of the season even if UH goes 6-7. I would bet money on it. there’s no way matlin offers a multiyear extension unless he wants the UH football program to commit suicide.

also, rodney, what are you smoking? because i want some.

  68. Kryon October 29, 2015 9:44 pm

I don’t want jj too. Idk why alot of people want jj back. Move forward. Yes, chow must b changed, but not back to jj. People, when jj was here not alot of div 1 teams ran no huddle run n shoot. Now, almost every team runs a similar type of offense. Back then defenses had a hard time wit trying to stop it cuz it was hardly seen. Now, all teams r equipped n can handle the offense better. What we need is someone that is more innovative. A young chip Kelly mind. Plus, u never go back wit ur ex, especially after they just drop u for someone else. What did he do at smu? Nothing. N he just packed up n left them in the middle of the season. Y would we want him back?

  69. 808 October 29, 2015 9:51 pm

Matlin is a figure head. He has a title in name only. When and if the power brokers at UH screw up again, and they will. Matlin will be the fall guy.

UH has autonomy. But, who is UH’s Phil Knight? Who holds the purse strings? Unless, UH is completely self reliant and able to pay their own way in athletics, they will still continue to ask the state for money for the football program.

I hope you’re right. A coaching change could be a fresh start to the program. We’ll see if a 6-7 record will create a change.

  70. hitman October 29, 2015 10:12 pm

rodney the key is you need people to buy and come to the game to make money because the football help all the other sports that don’t make money !! so the coach need to be a people person and push the sale of season tickets !! this something that chow is not good at !! he only smiles for his wife !! lol but im surprise he not pushing ticket sales because hecan makes extra in his contract !! so know day the coach always needs to be like car sales man !! sale your team player to the public is money made by the UH !!

  71. nomu October 29, 2015 10:25 pm

Just speculating, noting that current coaching staff footprint already influenced by past JJ affiliations. Note too that the offense is a spread offense, although it relies on the run more, unlike JJ’s run and shoot. Anyone know how current recruiting coming along? What’s the likelihood that the AD is already putting into place some cogs anticipating a coaching change? Just throwing this out there, maybe someone can give their thoughts on this?

  72. JustAsking October 29, 2015 10:45 pm

islandman: thanks for the link to the Wynn article. He was calling the plays four weeks into the 2013 season?

  73. SteveM October 29, 2015 11:16 pm

nomu — I think all offensive schemes need the same type of athlete– QB that is accurate, receivers who are fast and sure-handed, lineman that can block, running backs that can run and catch. Only exception might be an option attack where the QB has to be able to throw, pitch, run and take a beating as opposed to being tall to see and throw over the line from the pocket.

When JJ first came with the R&S, he inherited all of Von Appen’s players and recruits and orchestrated one the greatest NCAA turnarounds that year. The cupboard was not as bare as the win column. The cupboard is not bare now.

I feel if UH beats Air Force on Saturday, count on Chow being around a few more years. For some reason that I don’t understand, the current administration has been adamant about having Chow lead the Warriors. Seems he has convinced some that it takes 5 years to rebuild a program. But if the Warriors should lose, then the pressure from the fans calling for a change will be overwhelming. But is anyone listening?

  76. azwarrior22 October 30, 2015 6:10 am

Maitlin has got to be able to see that the longer Chow stays on the job, the more they are losing their fan base. This is the reality…many fans were patient but can no longer get excited about the same old results and excuses game after game and year after year, e.g. we need to try harder and do better and make less mistakes…duh. Well, that’s true with any team but most teams do not give a coach 4 years to get it right. Chow must go so we can bring some hope and excitement back to UH Warrior football. I’d like to see an interim coach take over now and let the cards play out on who the next coach may be, but anyone can do better that what Chow has done. I’ve got tickets to the UNLV game and UH should pound them but with Chow, I think it is a toss up because they have it in their heads that they can’t win. UH should beat Air Force too but I’m not optimistic. Chow must go !!

  80. KulaWarrior October 30, 2015 7:14 am

I love UH Football, and have been a season ticket holder since 1998.
While it is harder to watch the games the past few years, as a fan I think you have to support the team.
I think we have recruited as well as UH normally does, with the exception of the offensive line. For whatever reasons, the team is not successful. I agree that it is time for a coaching change.
I also think the community can / should do more to support this team; not only when they’re winning.
I grew up in Kentucky, where only recently has the UK Football team been competitive in the SEC; however, Commonwealth Stadium is sold out almost every home game, and has been for as long as I can remember.
I’ve never understood the relationship between UH Football and its fans, and not necessarily the fans on this site, who mostly seem to be real fans.
A sustained show of support (attendance) for UH Football would certainly have an impact on how the program is supported by the State. You dress for the job you want.
I think decisions like airing the game on cable live, while bringing in revenue, are poor decisions, as they detract from real people in the stands to help support and motivate the young men on the field. Tell me that doesn’t make a difference.
    Go Warriors.

    AF 42 UH 10

  81. H-Man October 30, 2015 7:44 am

azwarrior22, we are in agreement about Matlin and the need to make a change now. But regarding the two games/teams you mentioned, I feel UNLV is a better team than the Warriors who have to travel, again. And when they travel, they lose, what, 90% of the time? Also, I don’t think the Warriors can counter Air Force’s running game with an effective passing attack because they really need to establish the run first. I like our running backs, but you will see Chow using the short passing game more. Eventually there will be drops and INTs. Drives will stall. With Air Force, there will be many long, time-consuming drives. Turning the ball over to them is to their advantage. Only way the Warriors can win – cause turnovers and “don’t have penalties.” If they do that, the Warriors have a chance.

  82. fAT jEFF October 30, 2015 8:35 am

#79 PONO Brother you laid out exactly what I’d like to see!

Under Coach Chow, Hawaii has only one win on the road and that was last year against San Jose 13-0. I think that #80 is right; UNLV is a better team right now.

As for Air Force, Hawaii will be hard pressed to defend the run since the defensive line is thin at this point. Also, Air Force is a disciplined team. Air Force will attempt to control the clock to keep Hawaii’s offense off the field. I think Air Force will prevail in a close game.

    Pono,

I agree with the short-term patch job if its the best we can do. Not in agreement with Klemm or Rolo taking over right after. Neither have proven anything, even as coordinators at this point.

Maybe something along the lines of Rolo under JJ for a few years would be better…Then we determine whether Rolo would be the best fit.
