54…niko and al.
99= Zeno Choi
Zeno Choi did start a game as a freshman, something that another 99 great — Taase Faumui — did not.
fish wasn’t biting this weekend?
and 15 colt brennan automatic.
Faumui… The former Farrington star didn’t begin playing football until he was a junior in high school.
He wasn’t qualified academically to compete at UH his first season and he broke his foot his sophomore year, but as a junior Faumui helped lead the Rainbows to the Holiday Bowl.
During that magical 1992 season, Faumui finished with 54 tackles – including six for losses – and four quarterback sacks.
Injuries plagued him again his senior year, but Faumui was still impressive enough to be drafted in the fourth round by Pittsburgh.

Of the three, Travis LaBoy, Ryan Grice-Mullins or Greg Salas, I would say
Greg Salas—Too bad he did not catch on with the Patriots—Greg would have
won them some of the games the Pats lost this year…
#13, Alvis & Brashton Satele
#26 Gary Allen
#40 David Toloumu
#11 Blane Gaison
Earlier this year saw Taase standup paddling at Ala Moana and man this guy is still in great shape. Really nice guy too. We talked football while in the water.
Double Zero 00–Jim Otto

Ulu Perry should be given the Double Zero..it’s not the number it’s the eyes between those zero
Also adding George Noga, Chris Brown to the #54 list
101 to the beat writer
wow! I still remember those players/numbers…however i keep forgetting where I park my car sometimes after coming out of the grocery store.
#32 – Richard Higa
Car dealerships should put numbers on cars with the driver’s name on it.
Maybe then rubber necking might be avoided 🙂
#2 – Lyndell Jones
#10 – Jeff Duva
Who would you pick: Rolo or Nate Jackson?
David Maeva or Jake Patek?
Niko Noga or Al Noga?
would pick them in this order:
NN-AN,DM-JP,NR-NJ
HOW COME NOBODY SAID, “15”?
OOPS, WRONG. CMPTR SCREEN JUMPING ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Maybe because people don’t wanna remember the past…like when JJ’s name was being mentioned for the HC position. They were saying people still living in the past
74 – Levi Stanley. 77 – John Woodcock. 93 – Cliff Laboy.
I always thought the #50 should go to a local player who chose to stay home and represent the State
SPEAKING ABT JJ: HE HAD A NUMBA. ALSO, HOWBOUT THE DE OPPOSITE CLIFF LABOY, RICHARDSON?
save that no.50 for QB Tua Tagovailoa…. next years recruit
What is your opinion on QB Stephen Johnson II, who took his official visit to Hawaii this weekend? http://www.scout.com/player/165254-stephen-johnson?s=73 http://www.hudl.com/athlete/66122/stephen-johnson-ii
No word on an offer by UH.
GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
Dvonne Bess -what was his number?
#56 – Only one guy deserves that # – Mark Odem………
ST, Rolo, Dave, Niko…hard choices though.
Pomai, Odem with the skull and cross bones.
Was Jeris White #85?
Although Timmy Chang seems a lock for #14, I’d like to acknowledge the master kick/punt blocker Mike Akiu Sr. A definite game changer.
99 Lui Funga our next DC
#12 Tipton or Rolo? I say Tipton.
Don’t know what this number thing is about but I would go to the record book, establish that the more years you were a force the higher up consideration. Somebody has to fight for these guys……..
Jeris White # 85
Harold Stringert # 25
Larry Sherrer #48 on the all time rushing list
Albert Holmes #21 on the all time rushing list
Jim Kalili OL
Charlie Aiu #78 4 year starter OL
Scott Haneberg OT 2 year impact player
There are many more like Levi and Cliff Laboy, we beat who we supposed to beat and sometimes beat the better teams like Washington and Utah.
If your are looking for Linebackers the Jeff Ulbrich of their day were Randy Ingrham and Dave Dworsky both on the All-time list. When they hit you it was one way- backward. Bill Letz # 52 will soon be added to all time tackles list after Derek Inouchi makes a correction….3 year starter and played ST as a freshman.
Do yourself a favor and go thru the media guides and records on the Football website its full of great history. I still say this after having played in the old stadium- I never saw one single termite!!!!!
By the way June Jones wore # 11
Haneberg wore #72
19: great list.
What about 1 or Matt Mcbriar OR someone mentioned Greg Salas, etc, 7 Jason Elam, 10 Pisa Tinoisomoa, 15 for Colt Brennan, 18 Garrett Gabriel, 29 for Scott Harding, 38 Rich Miano, 54 Al Noga (I think Niko Noga also wore #54), 87 Derrick Branch, 96 Maa Tunuvasa, 97 Isaac Sopoaga and Mark Tuinei, forgot his number… sorry…
Sorry, really liked Jason Elam… Repeated his name…
I don’t know about best for the number, but some of the best names are Golden Richards and Colt Brennan.
Too many years, too short a memory, but the player numbers I can remember today are:
#14 Timmy Chang
#15 Colt Brennan
#26 Gary Allen
#54 the Nogas– Niko if I had to choose.
Also Samson and Hercules Satele.
ST, any commits from the past weekends visits. Do you think Rolo will sign any JC players during the upcoming early signing period. Would be great if we could bring in at least a couple JC guys on the DL.
#44- Andy Moody – Linebacker
49 – Mat McBriar
65 – Vince Manuwai
73 – Joe Onosai
79 – Leo Goeas
96 – Maa Tanuvasa
97 – Isaac Sopoaga
Forgot Adrian Klemm’s number.
Could put Chad Owens at 82, his number his red shirt freshman year to free make one less at #2.
#35 Dino Babers
#38 Rich Miano
#43 Jamal Farmer
#81 Walter Murray
#3 Jim Asmus, #7? Jason Elam
Also wearing #13 before he got hurt was Faalata Satele (Samson’s pops)
Also wearing #54 for a time was Petelo Noga
Before Leonard & Paipai was the original #42 Red Raider Walter Santiago
Don’t know his number but if you’re naming all time folks, can’t forget Larry Cole, DT, who went on to a long career with the Cowboys.
QB #17, Raphael Cherry or Bryant Moniz
Can’t remember his first name, maybe “Jim”, or “Jeff” maybe not, but last name Hall who played tight end and played with the TB Bucaneers.
Good Afternoon Tsaikos….
#96 Ma’a Tanuvasa
#62, think you’re referring to the late Ron Hall.
Buffo: that was Ron Hal. Don’t remember his number.
Ron Hall
Anybody mention the late Mark Tuinei?
An offensive lineman, but I remember he chased down
a speedy defensive back and smashed him.
Helped make the Dallas Cowboys America’s team.
Don’t know his UH number.
Maddog, #46, “Bill Letz # 52….3 year starter and played ST as a freshman.”
He played against our fearless leader Stephen Tsai?
🙂
Larry Cole and Golden Richards made me follow the Dallas Cowboys back in the 70’s. They had quite a team back then with Roger Staubach and Bob Hayes. Mark Tuinei came along later so I continued following them.
Notnasti, right. Ron Hall. Did he play after Elton Shintaku? Was there a good tight end named Larry Frank? Did Kent Untermann (sp?) Play tight end. We had some good ones back in the day.
What was Renfred Frias’ jersey number?
He was my favorite walk-on.
Wagner era.
I remember Jim Leahey, in his prime, describing Frias as being literally a “victory cigar”.
69.
Kent Unterman was my substitute teacher at Kalani.
Buffoman prior to Elton Shintaku was John Conley and before him was a silent giant Henry Sovio who played for Atlanta and the CFL. Those that could joke with the quiet giant would tease him about catching the ball-he was missing his index finger down to middle knuckle-he also kicked fg and xtra points
The was a tight end Larry Frank who was a friend of mine
45.
I second Tipton.
He engineered the best Hawaii game-winning drive ever against Wisconsin.
Mike Tressler – tough sonuvagun.
what was his number?
How about that all time wedge buster Semeri Ulufale. There was that tough running back, pre-Nasti Mate, Tui Ala; tough as nails.
Man we had some tough guys, and they did’ t have long hair.
Hey, did someone mention the dentist, Dr. Alex Kaloi? He was quite the high school player who chose to stay home.
Itai Sataua, Burton Coloma and George Lumpkin. Can’t remember the numbers.
#19 C.J. Hawthorne and Jeremiah Cockeran
#53 Blaze Soares
#3 Michael Carter
#7 The Late Mike Stennis
Hal Stringert #45
Nate Jackson over Nick Rolovich for #12. Nate played in more games as an impact player.
Davone Bess vs. Jason Elam…. very tough choice but would have to go with Elam for #7.
#53 Blaze Soares was a great player
Odem, Sydner and Michael Carter were unbelievable, tough to see someone beat them out.
Here are some that I could remember or could research easily…
1 – Greg Salas
2 – Chad Owens
3 – Jacob Espiau
4 – Nate Ilaoa
5 – Michael Washington
6 – Michael Brewster
7 – Jason Elam, Davone Bess
8 – Ashley Lelie
9 – Dan Robinson
10 – Pisa Tinoisamoa
11 –
12 – Nick Rolovich, Nate Jackson
13 –
14 – Timmy Chang
15 – Colt Brennan
20 – Avion Weaver
21 – Eddie Klaneski
23 – Sean Butts
26 – Jeff Sydner
28 – Dane McArthur
29 – John Veneri
30 – Travis Sims
34 – Regan Mauia
37 – Abe Elimimian
38 – Rich Miano
39 – James Fenderson
All numbers worn by Warriors was and will always be the best numbers
#42 Bill Massey
Harold Stringert #25 was a great CB and teammate. He may have gone by Hal but my source are programs and articles I saved, still hear Larry Price bellowing his name and he was a teammate of mine. Any suggestions I have made can be vetted by Larry Price or Rick Nlangiardi-thx
Was Bill Massey in the same backfield with Dr. Larry Shearer (sp?)?
#29 Paul Harris is 4th for single season rushing yards in UH history, 1,132.
Bill Massey was indeed in the backfield with Dr Larry, what couple of characters. All we did was run those guys took a brutal beating but they played every week. I could talk story for hours about what some guys did so they could play. Different time-
Paul Harris picked up his yardage, despite the poor UH W-L record in 2015.
Bill Massey played 1968-70, and Sherrer 1969-71, per UH website, so they were in the same backfield for 1969 to 1970.
#11 – Blaine Gaison
#8 – Mark Kafentzis
#15 – Dana McLemore
#78 – Jim Mills
Ron Hall Played NFL for 5+ years but
I dont’t remember him doing good
at U of H.
#18 – Garrett
Andrew Tovi, mililani offensive lineman just committed to Utah State. Did Hawaii offer him?
“Old-Timers Disease” setting in. I recall some great players wearing #44 on defense but the names are not coming to mind. Defensive ends I think. Help!
Tim Buchanon
#94,
Don’t think so.
Seriously, #32 is the only number that is retired at UH. Tom Kaulakukui. Not only was he the first All-American at UH, but he was a successful UH HC both before and after WWII. In between his coaching stints he was an NCO in the army.
#50 Dave Mutter
#79 Keith Ah Yuen
#24 Thero Mitchell
Was Kalili the center when Massey/Shearer were the backs? Who was the QB?
32 OJ USC
Jim Kalili was a guard. He spent time with Washington. I think it goes Larry Arnold then Howard Gay. He was done in 1970
Dan Audick (50?). Arrived as a 195 lbs lineman. Almost lived in the garage sized weight room attached to Klum Gym and developed into a 4th round draft pick by the Steelers as a senior.
Saw new coaches on the news. Smith hasn’t aged. He looks the same.
Garret Gabriel #18
Ma’a Tanavasa #96
What no 43 Dana Mclemore
61 Jesse Sapolu
10. Jeris White
74. Levi Stanley, born to play football, probably the best defensive tackle ever.
Nobody remembers me.
I was a third-team AP All-American as a special teams player.
My name is Larry Khan-Smith.
Does anybody know my number?
Does anybody know how to get to Sesame Street?
I stand corrected…
15. Dana Mclemore
85. Jeris White
Adding
88. Tom Tuinei
50. Ed Foote
db Paul Dombroski dodono #
92. DaMenehune: Ron Hall led UH in receiving his senior year.
28. Ed “Soupy” Kawawaki, 1955
Receptions.
40. Bobby Ahu
73. Henry “Kapono” Kaaihue
93. Cliff Laboy
77 John Woodcock
Thanks NotNasti.
Madddog50 I remember Jim Kalili as a center.
Guard next to him was my neighbor Tony
Nakazawa a Little Academic All American.
#20 Skippy Dyer, of 1955 football team that upset Nebraska, 6-0 .
papajoe2: Did you know Paul Dombroski was a
Linfield Wildcat before that? Unreal all around athlete.
111 Notnasti; that year a big name coach from a big name school (I can’t remember either) went to Ron Hall after the game and told him he was the best tight end they faced all season.
13 Alvis Satele OLB
19 Jeremiah Cockheran WR
22 Bryan Addison FS
32 Thomas Kaulukukui RB
48 Junior Lopati RB/SB
53 Anthony Woodson LB *
64 Carl Kenneybrew LB
91 John Taylor OLB
94 Collin Scotts DT
* With all due respect to Blaze Soares, I believe Woodson had a better career. Yes Blaze had an all-time huge hit in the ’07 Boise St game but Woodson had the “Superman” sack (I think Utah ’82) & the strip-sack-fumble recovery in the ’82 Nebraska game.
#107, Khan-Smith was #86, I think . . . guy was fast!
UH has started a project seeking the best Warriors for each jersey number.
Clever Idea…to motivate the next generation of players to bring his A game to the field so, that his name will be a top the best that used the uniform number he’s wearing.
Project Warfare ….Warrior On
Hope it all translates to W’s
Larry Goeas, #62 was an undersized walk-on who became a valuable special teams starter and defensive lineman. Not flashy, just made plays, and was always in the mix. Became a successful stockbroker, here locally, also some TV color work for games.
#84 (I think) Itai Sataua
Sorry, #85
107 Larry Kahn-Smith #86 my number in High School. He’s doing good things now for the gubment.
#92 I had Tommy Kaulakukui for pays ed at UH. Knew him as a Coach and later as U.S. Marshall for the State of Hawaii.
kk808: Maybe it was vs. Michigan, where Hall led HI in receiving. Look at the stats (handwritten). Game was a sellout, w/almost 8,000 no shows. http://hawaiiathletics.com/custompages/Stats/Fball/1986/1986%20FB%20UH%20vs%20Michicgan%20Dec%206.PDF
107. 86.
#30 – Nuu Faaola.
As a follow-up to yesterday’s blog topic, I wonder if Coach AE is recruiting this kid from his HS alma mater Crenshaw High……starring for and leading the Cougars to the CIF-LA City Section Championship game but losing to Narbonne HS.
Though undersized……like Channon Harris, Justin Colbert, Chad Owens, Mike Washington……this kid looks to have the same type of speed and quickness ideal to play SB/KR/PR……positions that UH could use some added depth…..

#17 Heikoti Fakava
#11 – Rodney Glover, got a huge win on the road in 92 day after hurricane Iniki.
I would rather have the Athletic Department, put they’re best efforts; at, better contracts and recruiting than this silly ass who are the best legacy players.
Any player that chose to be here, did it because they believed. I believe, that most, if not all gave their best efforts. Let us not divide; let us conquer.
Let’s bring in all of our former Warriors, not the few!
Enough, nostalgia; give me the desiagh. That goes for me too.
#65 – Vince Manuwai
#23 – Matthew Harding
Another Crenshaw HS WR/SB/CB/KR/PR prospect…..who de-committed from UCLA….

130.
I remember watching Faaola score two short rushing touchdowns for the Jets(?) and then the strike happened.
That’s the Faaola I wish to remember, not the made-for-television Faaola.
Jim Kalili was a guard, Ed Foote was the center my freshman year. Two guards were Tom fruechtel and Tony Nakazawa and Academic All American. Bill Kaii was behind Ed foote as a Junior and I was third as a freshman. For sure Jim never played center- there was also a guy named Ken Mayo who was in the mix at center but gone by my 2nd year. Dan Audick I think wore a 60 number as he started out as a guard and was a freshman when I was a Senior. Tony N is in Alaska and pretty sure he is a college professor, Tom Fruechtel I see once every year or so is a retired CEO we were at New Mexico with a group of mature Warriors. Tony was 61 Tom 62 I lockered between them-great and I mean great guys but boy did I have to. Put up with a lot of crap!!! Pretty sure I deserved it!!!! Hope that helps-
Warren Jones-6
Ivin Jasper-4
What is Junior Lopati’s jersey number?
That guy, like Nate Ilaloa, was headed for the NFL, if not for injury.
As a child, I remember Lopati getting injured by some jackass from SDSU after scoring a touchdown.
I was young; I actually cried, and asked my uncle, “Why did he have to tackle him? He was already in the end zone.”
Other UH players who could have played at the next level, barring injury/women’s issue: Tony Webster(basketball), Kylie Page(women’s basketball).
Ilola was a shell of his former self, and he still almost made the Dolphins roster.
When I watch the ESPN “30 for 30” series about Marcus Dupree, I always think of Lopati.
And Joe Onosai.
Who knows?
He could have been a Hall of Famer center.
