Pomai ~ It inspired me to send in my score of UH 56 – Toejams 13 (blocked extra point). So D-1, it’s me and you, down to the wire on every game this season!

I can see a conflict of interest if UH is looking for a way out of the WAC while still looking out for the WAC’s best interest. But, I don’t see them being held liable if the WAC starts suing everybody. The only reason why UH is looking to outside conferences is because FSU and Nevada left. If they were still in the WAC, UH wouldn’t be looking at other conferences. JD is finally looking out for UH instead of the WAC.

Their AD, Scott Barnes, is gonna feel lots more pressure when basketball season rolls around:

Barnes said if the WAC was to bring in other schools, like UT-San Antonio or Texas State or North Texas, it would revisit another binding agreement. Clearly, those schools need to know what they might be joining. Barnes is a new member of the NCAA tournament men’s basketball selection committee. He knows he can’t put Utah State in any situation where the men’s basketball program doesn’t have a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAAs.

A six-team WAC won’t lose its AQ for two years after it drops below seven teams (at the minimum 2012 and ’13) but must add a seventh team three years after (for 2014).

…the decision comes before September 1.

My belief is that they’ll do a good job.

Anyway, off to my meetings now. d1, the drive was pleasant yesterday and hopefully meetings go well today.

It is important to note that adding UH to the Big West would give the Big West automatic spots in the NCAA tournament for softball, baseball and volleyball…if they value those sports, UH was in the postseason for all 3 sports and would add strength to their conference in those sports.

Providing an NCAA spot on 3 sports might be the key for UH. If that is important enough to the Big West that UH doesn’t need to provide travel subsidies to the Big West, then the economics of independence might work out.
