Toloumu had a pretty good NFL career with the Jets.

Being in Asia I can say don’t try to bridge the market using football. Football is really a US sport.

Bridge the market with olympic sports like basketball for China and the Philippines. Swimming for all countries in Asia and ASEAN. Soccer (football) for almost all Asian and ASEAN nations or even golf. Revive baseball to connect with countries like Taiwan, Japan, Korea. Bridge the market with Hawaii’s culture which we all know IS Asian influenced. Bridge the future by showing them our past ties with Asia and how Asia’s cultures have mixed in very well with Hawaii’s. Most importantly, bridge the market by showing what a great school UH is to get an education.

If you take this road the Asian market will not just hear of US college teams like Notre Dame, Stanford, etc. They will hear and see and be interested in maybe enough to follow and send their kids to a US college called Hawaii if we do some goodwill or exchanges, or whatever the NCAA allows. The key is that you cannot come to Asia with football alone, you will never connect. You have to come to Asia or ASEAN with sports they already know and with an understanding that for parents education may be all that matters. Market the school more then sports…and then say oh by the way, does your child play golf, basketball, enjoy swimming, soccer, baseball, etc.

The truth is the US is a very inward looking country. We love football so much, we don’t even notice the rest of the world doesn’t care that much about it. Bridge the market with Hawaii, UH, olympic sports that Asia and ASEAN follow and play, and then it will open up the door to football.

And at the very least, recruit for sports like golf. You would not believe how much talent from Thailand and Singapore goes unnoticed. These are smart kids who can speak English and can be admitted to UH no problem. At least this way, you start a buzz with students and parents when their child gets a letter of interest from UH…and the seeding begins.

Hit the junior programs…that’s where you want to start. From my experience with junior programs these kids are looking at dead ends when they hit 16-18. They know of USC, Stanford, etc. but they don’t know how to get there through sports.

Mr Ben Jay, create a map for these kids to follow. Where do they need to be at what points in their life in order to get into UH and create a special Aian/ASEAN administrator who will open every email, contact every junior sports organizations, and have a someone planted with boots on the ground in Asia/ASEAN to reach out. Or at the very least, skype or video conference with schools and junior organizations.

For example, contact the Singapore Golf Association, that’s their junior golf governing body. Skype with them, Q and A. Tell them you are interested and Hawaii is interested in recruiting their talent. Showcase the culture, UH, and the golf program. Tell them you understand that for 2 years all males are required to do military service but for them not to stop their sport because Hawaii may have a place for them after them after their service. Do these things and the kids will know you and follow you and parents will open up to you.

The truth is and in my opinion this is the vision…we aren’t going to Asia to look for football players. Maybe we’ll find a handful. But the vision is to get a large following of Hawaii and Hawaii sports in Asia. And to me, that starts at the junior level with sports the follow and play. Get in touch with junior organizations and you’ll see just how far things can go.

Don’t come to Asia with American football on your mind. Come to Asia with the people here and what they like on your mind…and go from there.

my two cents 🙂

I’m sure Alabama Coach Nick Saban is sleeping well after seeing the pictures and reading the story about his player. I bet this freshman never makes it to Bama. To stupid to flaunt all that cash.
